He’s Lying About His Job: 5 Clues To What He’s Really Doing

April 24, 2025 by Riley Jones

You meet someone new, and everything seems great—until little things about his job just don’t add up. Maybe he says he’s in “finance” but can never explain what he actually does. Maybe his work hours are all over the place, or he always seems vague when you ask about his day. If you’re starting to wonder, “Is he lying about his job?” you’re not alone.

People lie about their jobs more often than you’d think, and not always for the reasons you might expect. Whether it’s to impress someone, hide something, or create a false identity, job-related lies can signal deeper issues. Let’s break down five major clues that he’s not being honest and what they might actually mean.

1. His Job Title Keeps Changing

One day he’s a “marketing consultant,” the next he’s “in digital media.” Then you catch him telling someone else he’s “a project manager for a tech startup.” While some job descriptions naturally vary, constant shifts in his job title could mean he’s fabricating or exaggerating his role. If he’s unable to clearly and consistently explain what he does, that’s a major red flag.

What it might mean: He could be unemployed, in a job he’s embarrassed about, or using a fake title to sound more important. If he’s constantly reinventing his career story, he’s trying to control the narrative, not share the truth.

2. He’s Super Vague About His Workday

When you ask how his day went, he responds with generic lines like “It was fine” or “Busy, as usual,” but never shares any actual details. No funny office stories, no mention of coworkers, no projects he’s excited (or stressed) about. It’s like he’s giving you the “outline” of a job without any of the real substance.

What it might mean: He may not have gone to work at all, or he’s trying to hide what he actually does for a living. If someone truly enjoys or even just tolerates their job, they’ll have something to say about it. Silence often speaks volumes.

3. He Can Never Predict His Schedule

Sure, some jobs are unpredictable. But if his availability changes at the last minute all the time, and he always has a new excuse—late meetings, sudden trips, or working odd hours—it’s worth digging deeper.

What it might mean: This could indicate anything from working an entirely different job to living a double life. In some cases, the “unpredictable job” is just a convenient excuse to disappear when needed.

4. He Doesn’t Want You Near His Workplace

He’ll meet you anywhere, but not for lunch near his office. He’s got excuses for why you can’t swing by to pick him up, or why you can’t meet his coworkers at the company party. If he’s really into you, he’d want you to know more about where he spends the majority of his day, right?

What it might mean: He may not work where he says he does or may not have a job at all. Keeping you far away from his “work life” means he’s intentionally keeping that part of his world secret.

5. He Gets Defensive When You Ask Questions

When you ask something as simple as, “What’s your job like?” and he gets irritated or flips the script on you, take note. A confident person with nothing to hide won’t feel attacked by basic curiosity. If he’s reacting like you’re interrogating him, it could be because the answers don’t exist or don’t match the story he’s built.

What it might mean: Defensiveness is often a deflection technique. He may feel guilty or nervous that the truth is starting to surface. If he can’t handle normal questions about his career, what else is he hiding?

So What Do You Do If You Suspect He’s Lying?

Start by trusting your instincts. If something feels off, it probably is. You don’t need to hire a private investigator, but you do have the right to ask questions in a relationship, especially when someone’s behavior is raising red flags.

It’s also worth noting that lying about a job often isn’t just about ego. It can be a sign of deeper dishonesty or even manipulation. Is he trying to impress you, or is he trying to keep you from discovering something bigger? Either way, it’s important to remember: You deserve someone who’s honest with you about everything.

Final Thoughts

A job doesn’t define a person, but lying about it sure can. Pay attention to the signs, ask the right questions, and never feel guilty for wanting the truth. Trust is the foundation of any relationship, and if that’s already cracking, it’s time to rethink who you’re building with.

Have you ever dated someone who lied about their job? What tipped you off, and how did you handle it?
