Are you due for a promotion? What if you could ensure that you’re not passed over? Here are 10 actions your boss is looking for before giving you that promotion.

1. Take Initiative

Does your boss always have to give you assignments and deadlines? If you want a promotion, your boss is probably looking for you to take more initiative. Try to anticipate what your boss might need and turn it around before it’s due. Your boss will be impressed by your work ethic.

2. Show Loyalty

Many companies want to know that you’re committed to your job long-term before promoting you. Especially if you’ll be in a management role supervising others, replacing you may not be easy. Before getting promoted, your boss may want to see that you are thinking long-term about your position and your future at the company.

3. Work Well with Others

Would you consider yourself a team player? To get promoted, you’ll have to demonstrate that you’re a vital part of the team. Make sure that you’re willing to help other employees and fill in where needed.

4. Ask for Feedback

Your boss will want to know that you’re always looking to improve. You can ask for feedback on your performance or on a specific project. Once you get this feedback make sure you apply it accordingly.

5. Seek Professional Development

You should always be working toward improving your skills. Whether you work on tangible skills to improve your trade or you seek leadership training, make sure that you are always learning. This will signal to your boss that you’re ready for a promotion.

6. Exceed Expectations

This goes without saying, but to get promoted you should always be doing more than is expected of you. Doing the bare minimum of your role’s requirements won’t help you climb the ladder. Instead, offer to mentor new employees or take on additional work. Try and challenge yourself so that you’ll learn new skills.

7. Have a Positive Attitude

Being a positive influence in the workplace is probably a prerequisite for a promotion. Motivate those around you and build strong relationships with your peers to stand out.

8. Have Your Boss’ Back

Making your boss look good is one thing you should always try to do. Support your boss’ goals and deliver the best work that you can.

9. Get Noticed

It’s important to put yourself in the right situations to get your name recognized. Then, when a promotion comes up your boss and upper management will be more likely to consider you. This may mean attending more company events or asking to present in front of higher-level bosses.

10. Make Your Goals Known

Sometimes your boss is waiting for you to ask for the promotion that you want. If you haven’t communicated your professional goals, your boss may be unsure if you are interested in a new role. Make sure to be clear during performance reviews and if any positions open up that align with your goals.

How are you preparing for your next promotion? Let us know in the comments.
