The average cost of college tuition in the U.S. for undergraduate students has more than tripled over the last 58 years, according to data from the National Center for Education. It’s no surprise that many people are opting to start their careers without a college degree. Here are 10 ways you can get a 6 figure job without a degree.

1. On-The-Job Training

If you plan on not getting a college degree, it may be beneficial to look for an apprenticeship or internship in your desired field. This will help bolster your resume so that you can still work toward a 6 figure job without a degree. Many apprenticeships are available for trades like electricians and plumbers. Many large companies, government agencies, and nonprofits offer unpaid and paid internships. You can find internship listings on websites like Extern, USA Jobs, and Handshake.

2. Run Your Own Business

As a small business owner, there is no cap on how much you can earn. Whether you have a great idea for a new product or open up your own store, there are endless possibilities for what owning a business could look like. While you might not make 6 figures right away, as you scale your business you can achieve your goal of earning 6 figures.

3. Get Training or Certificates

Getting specialized training and certificates costs much less than a college degree and can put you on the right path to securing jobs that pay 6 figures without a degree. Jobs in the tech space can be especially lucrative and may only require a certificate and experience, such as an ethical hacker or cybersecurity specialist.

Just like owning a small business, becoming a realtor has endless earning potential. You will need to take classes, pass a real estate exam, and find a brokerage first, but after taking these steps you are free to build up your business and client base. Most realtors don’t make 6 figures in the first year, but over time find success even without a degree.

5. Train to Become a Firefighter or Police Officer

Depending on location, firefighters and police officers can easily make 6 figures without a degree. Plus, you’ll have the ability to move up the ranks with experience and training. If you decide to become a chief at some point, you may need a degree but it’s likely that your town or city will help cover the cost of your education.

6. Look into Travelling Construction

The salary for a traveling construction worker in the United States can be as $142,000 per year. Pay varies based on skill level, location, and years of experience. As a traveling construction worker, you will assist with a variety of projects.

7. Consider a Sales Job

Sales consultants are often one of the highest-paying jobs you can have without a degree. The possibilities of what you can sell are endless from selling cars, boats, private planes, or software. Many of the skills you will need to be a successful salesperson can be learned on the job and from mentors.

8. Try Freelancing

If you have a knack for writing, graphic design, or videography you can become a freelancer with no college degree. While it takes time to build up your portfolio and secure clients, over time you can build your brand and raise your rates.

9. Become a Chef

10. Transportation Jobs

Some of the most lucrative 6 figure jobs without a degree are in the transportation industry. For example, train conductors and maintenance workers can make six figures depending on location and skill. Another idea is to become an owner-operator truck driver. On average, truck drivers that operate their own trucks make around $200,000 per year.
