MLK Day is a federal holiday to honor civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., which is celebrated on the third Monday in January. This year it will fall on January 20, 2025, coinciding with inauguration day. While all federal offices, banks, schools, and the post office will be closed on the holiday, many stores remain open. Here we’ll let you know what retail stores are open and closed on MLK Day.

What Retail Stores are Open and Closed on MLK Day?

If you’re looking to have some fun on MLK Day most stores, parks, entertainment, restaurants, and gyms will remain open on MLK Day 2025. Very rarely are retail stores closed on MLK Day, but the holiday may affect store hours. 

Grocery Stores

Grocery store chains are open on MLK Day 2025. Most operate under normal business hours on the holiday, as well. Of course, check with your local store in case they have modified hours.

Department Stores

Large retailers are open on MLK Day, and many have sales to celebrate the holiday. Malls are also open on the holiday. Some popular department stores that are open include:

  • Ross Stores

  • Marshall’s 
  • Kohl’s
  • Target

What Retailers Have Sales on MLK Day?

Although MLK Day doesn’t have deals like Black Friday or Memorial Day, there are still many retailers that have decent sales for the holiday. Many sales include tech, mattresses, and home goods.

  • Amazon: Everything from home appliances like air purifiers to AirPods, and vacuums are on sale at Amazon.
  • Best Buy: You can save on tech products like laptops, Apple Watches, headphones, and TVs at Best Buy on MLK Day.
  • Mattress Firm: Select mattresses are on sale during the Mattress Firm MLK Day sale.

Hardware and Sporting Goods Stores

All hardware stores are open on MLK Day. These include stores like Home Depot, Lowes, and Ace Hardware. Additionally, sporting goods stores are also open including Dick’s Sporting Goods, REI, and Bass Pro Shops.

Family Entertainment

Parks, movie theaters, and bowling alleys are all usually open on MLK Day. Additionally, many national parks offer free admission on MLK Day if they charge a fee. MLK Day is one of 7 holidays where national parks offer free admission.

Restaurants

Chain restaurants remain open on MLK Day 2025. Local establishments may be closed or have different hours, so call ahead before you make plans to eat out.

Pharmacies and Drug Stores

All major drug stores are open on MLK Day 2025. These include CVS, Walgreens, Rite-Aide, and Duane Reade, However, some pharmacy hours may be different for the holiday. Check with your local store to confirm its hours.
