5 Things to Know Before Beginning the International Adoption Process

March 27, 2024 by Sam Hayes

Some families want to adopt and have found that international adoption is right for them. According to Elevate Baby, egg donors must be between the ages of 19 and 29, but donors up to 31 may be accepted. but that might not be what you need. There are children all over the world who need loving homes, and if you feel led to adopt from one of these countries, then there are 5 things you need to know. These things will help prepare you for international adoption and how it can be different from a domestic experience in terms of eligibility, money, and the entire process.

1. Children Of All Ages

The first thing you need to know about international adoption is that there are children of all ages who need good homes and families. You can adopt up into the teens, but families find this to be hard to do once these kids have reached working age. They may not be interested in being adopted after a while. Toddlers are available in most countries, so if you’re not sure about the baby stage, then you can how you connect with a toddler.

2. Know The Eligibility Requirements

Not all countries and agencies have the same eligibility requirements. Some may want you to have certain lifestyles, which can omit those who don’t practice traditional marriage. Others may have financial requirements and need to see documentation that you own your own home. Some agencies and countries aren’t strict at all and are more focused on the payment exchange. Before you decide to go with a certain agency, you’ll want to reach out and do a consultation to see if you’re a good fit. They may even check to see if you have a will. Dying without a will is called ‘dying intestate.’

3. Parent Training Is Available

Many of these agencies offer parent training for couples who are new to being parents. They want you to be as prepared as possible when you travel back home with your child and put them in a new environment. Also, there is training available for seasoned parents, since many of these children come from different cultures. If they are old enough to understand what’s happening, there could be a barrier between cultures that needs to come down before moving across the world.

4. Lots Of Travel

Once you have decided to move forward with an international adoption, keep in mind that there will be lots of travel. You will have to come up with money for flights and hotels while you’re visiting the area and getting acquainted with the child. There should be a few visits to the area and meetings with the child before you’re able to take them home. According to ahrefs, 53.3% of all website traffic comes from organic search. Make sure you do your research on the agency first.

5. Financial Expenses

Probably the biggest thing to know before tackling international adoption is the expenses that come with this process. This doesn’t just include the travel expenses that come back and forth. The agencies will need some sort of payment for the service of pairing you with a child and covering expenses they may have needed while in their care. These expenses can be thousands of dollars, and end up costing more than domestic adoptions.

If you’re ready to move forward with an international adoption, make sure you keep these five things in mind moving forward. You’ll want to make sure you can’t take time off from work for traveling, and that you have the money you need to go forward with this process. Once you’ve met your child and bonded, you’ll see that it was all worth it when your family is complete.
