How to Secure a Dental Internship this Summer

December 26, 2023 by Sam Hayes

Becoming a dentist typically requires an internship in addition to traditional dental schooling. Regardless of whether you plan to open your own dental clinic or if you want to work for someone else, seeking an internship is always advisable before pursuing a full-time career in the industry. A dental internship can provide you with the valuable insights necessary to determine if the career path is truly right for you.

Learn About Dental Internships Ahead of Time

Determining which area of dentistry you may want to focus on can go a long way once you begin searching for an internship that is right for you. Whether you choose to go into pediatric dentistry or if you intend to specialize in understanding the ins and outs of TMJ, there are plenty of different areas to consider if you want to work as a dentist today. If you are a dentist who specializes in TMJ dysfunction, most of your patients will likely fall between the ages of 20 and 40.

Ensure You Have the Necessary Qualifications

In most instances, you will need to have a high school diploma or a GED to your name to qualify for a dental internship, depending on the type of work you’re interested in pursuing at the time. Depending on the type of dentistry internship you’re interested in, you may require additional experience. Research qualification requirements for dental internships you’re seeking at the time based on your location, age, and previous experience in the field.

Seek an Accredited Internship

Anytime you are thinking of pursuing a career as a dentist, and you intend to do so on your own, you will first want to search for an accredited internship. An accredited internship will be accredited by the ADA, also known as the American Dental Association. Finding an accredited internship is a way to ensure you’re on the right track before entering university. Always verify that an internship is accredited if you want to utilize it in the future.

Compare Internship Goals and Interests

Anytime you are thinking of finding a dentistry internship, you will want to compare the goals and interests of each opportunity. Finding the right internship will require a basic understanding of the career or position you’re interested in. Compare internships near you to find the most suitable match for your needs, whether you intend to make the most money possible or if you simply want to give back.

Ask Questions Ahead of Time

Before accepting an offer for an internship, it’s also important to consider whether the internship is paid or unpaid. In most cases, offering a fair minimum wage to those who accept an internship can prevent potential lawsuits or cases against an FLSA, or Fair Labor Standards Act accusation. It is always best to seek an employer who is willing to offer a paid internship, whenever possible.

Research Dental Offices and Clinics Offering Internships

You may also want to seek dental offices that utilize forward-thinking technologies and software, especially if you have an interest in working in tech along with dentistry. The eCommerce fulfillment industry alone was estimated to be worth more than $97 billion in 2022, according to Capital One Shopping Research. Making the transition to eCommerce and virtual platforms when managing a dental practice is not only a way to maximize your online reach, but it can also open many new doors of opportunities when it comes to generating sales and profit.

Applying for a dental internship is one of the fastest ways to find yourself with opportunities in the field of dentistry, even if you have just recently graduated from high school. The more experience you have in the industry of dentistry, the easier it will be for you to find the right path for you once you are enrolled in the college or university of your choice. With adequate experience gained during a dental internship, you can easily move forward with the career goals and plans you have in mind.
