Costs to Consider Before Having Your First Baby

December 20, 2023 by Sam Hayes

Having a baby is one of the biggest moments in life, especially if you have always dreamed of having a family of your own. If you are thinking of planning a family, and you want to do so by preparing with your money, it’s important to take time to consider the costs that are most commonly associated with rearing a child from newborn to adulthood. Being financially prepared to have your first baby will allow you to make the most of the experience without feeling stressed, scared, or simply overwhelmed.

Labor and Childbirth

Depending on where you currently live, you may need to consider the cost of having your baby in a particular state or country. In the US, currently, it costs an average between $8,000 to more than $16,000 per childbirth. When you are thinking of having a baby, you will want to consider how you intend to do so while also considering the type of insurance you have at the time. Research the typical costs of childbirth based on your insurance policy, location, and the type of birth you’re interested in pursuing. Home births may be more cost-effective, depending on the midwife you choose to hire to assist with the process.

Nursery, Clothing, Toys, Diapers, and Food

If you’re preparing to have your first baby, creating the perfect nursery and environment for nurturing is essential. Investing in cribs, toys, and clothing can be done before your child is born to help save time while alleviating stress. If you are hosting a baby shower, you can also choose to do so while requesting that all guests bring gifts such as clothing, toys, diapers, and even baby food, depending on when your baby is due.

You may also want to consider whether you will be breastfeeding or if you will be utilizing various baby formulas and food once your child is born. Immerse yourself in motherhood groups, both locally and online, to find the right path for you.

Surrogacy Costs and Expenses

If you are currently acting as a surrogate mother, or you’re interested in pursuing surrogacy as an option to have a child of your own, it’s important to take time to consider the costs involved in the process. The cost of surrogacy will likely vary based on potential medical circumstances that you may expect during the pregnancy, your age, and whether you will require the assistance of an outside egg donor to complete the surrogacy.

Daycare, Childcare, and Schooling

Consider the type of childcare, daycare centers, and schooling locations that you will be comparing for your child in the future. Just last year, approximately 1.5 million children, including a total of 32% of 3, 4, and 5-year-olds, were enrolled in a childcare or preschool program last year alone. Comparing schools, daycare costs, and child centers near you before giving birth will provide you with valuable insight into the potential costs you will need to account for in the future.

Dental and Healthcare

Taking care of your child’s dental care and overall health is essential as a parent. Approximately 52% of all children ages six to eight have experienced at least one cavity in their teeth, according to the CDC. Always research various pediatricians and dental offices designed for pediatric patients ahead of time to find the best locations for you and your loved ones. Compare dental insurance rates and healthcare policies to find the best coverage for your child at any age.

The more educated you are when it comes to managing the costs of your first baby, the easier it will be for you to tackle any obstacles you face and encounter along the way. From handling the healthcare of your child to preparing for emergencies, clothing, and even hobbies in the future, there are many aspects of life to keep in mind anytime you are thinking of bringing a baby into the world.
