How to Stay Safe During Your First Winter Upstate

November 22, 2023 by Sam Hayes

Winter can leave you uncomfortable and even prone to cold-related health issues. This makes it important for you to find a way to stay safe throughout winter and safeguard your money by making sure that you don’t fall sick and end up in need of costly health treatments. Here are some of the ways in which you can keep yourself safe throughout your first winter upstate and learn the best measures to take for all winters that follow.

Practice Safe Snow and Ice Removal

As the snow falls, you’ll still have errands to run and therefore need to handle snow and ice removal. In this case, make sure that you do it as safely as you can since failure to take precautions can cause damage to property or even injury to you. On this note, keep in mind that some of the most common types of injuries related to slips and falls are a result of wet floors, damaged sidewalks, torn carpets, poor lighting, and poor snow and ice removal. You need to take care, and if you realize that you can’t handle this task yourself, don’t hesitate to seek the assistance of a professional.

Keep Your Appliances in Good Shape

Next, make sure that your home’s indoor spaces are warm by making use of air conditioning and other measures. With the indoors at a comfortable temperature, you may find it easier to rest and stay in great health through the winter. This makes it a good idea for you to have a professional inspect your air conditioner and make any repairs that may be necessary to work on. As a result, you can enjoy warmth throughout the winter, and all without extreme use of energy.

Remember to also have the plumbing checked and repaired the moment something goes wrong with it. The professional who does this should also ensure that all other appliances and equipment associated with the plumbing are in good shape as well. This includes a spa, hot tub, or pool if you own one, which is something that you have in common with 17.12% of Americans aged between 18 and 29 years old. With the help of a good plumber, you should be able to winterize all these units and protect them from winter damage.

Watch the Weather Forecast

Remember that you need to keep an eye on the weather forecast as well. This is going to save you from a potential disaster because if there’s a storm set to blow your way, you can stay safe by putting off your plans for the day. You’ll also keep your family safer as a result since a snowstorm is reason enough to keep your children home from school for a day or two as you wait for a severe storm to blow over. Note that on average, children who attended preschool ended up missing 1.5 fewer days a year than those who had not attended, according to Education Week. That said, make sure that your whole family understands the implications of harsh weather so that they know what to take care of.

Always Keep an Emergency Kit in Your Vehicle

Last but not least, make sure that you have an emergency kit with you in the car every single time that you hit the road in winter. This kit should have things like flares, a flashlight, a portable charger, water, jumper cables, non-perishable foods, blankets, matches, a medical first aid kit, and a shovel. With these items in your vehicle, you may be able to stay safer on the roads as the conditions get unpredictable.

These tips should help you stay safe during your first winter upstate. As a result, you may learn a few important lessons that will make future winters easier for you to get through. Remember that safety should always come first and avoid getting into situations that may be complex to get out of.
