Planning a Summer Move? Here’s How to Save on Moving Costs

June 7, 2023 by Sam Hayes

Like most Americans, you’ve probably moved several times in your lifetime. So you understand that moving to a new home or commercial property means spending money. However, with planning, you can avoid breaking the bank as you change places this summer. Read on to see how you can save on those moving costs.

Make Updates to Current Home

While it might seem counterproductive at first, spending money before you move can put more money in your pocket later. According to Home 365, homeowners can get back 85% of the cost of roof replacement upon resale. Something as simple as painting the interior of your home can have an ROI of as much as 107%. When trying to sell your home, the better it looks, the faster you can get it off the market. So, in addition to being able to move to your new home faster, having more equity in your existing home lets you walk away with a profit.

Get Rid of Unused Items

If you’ve lived in your home for at least over a year, you probably have some things you want to get rid of. Do you have clothes that still have the tags on them that you haven’t worn yet? Instead of wagging boxes of clothes you may not wear at your new home, consider giving them away to people that can use them. In addition to donations, you can make money by having a yard sale. Since its creation in 1857, spring mattresses are still one of the most popular types of mattresses. If you have some old spring mattresses to get off your hands. You may be able to sell them for a decent price.

Avoid Weekend Moves

Moving on the weekend is understandable of most people’s schedules, but it can be more costly. Unfortunately, other people often have the same idea and use the weekend as their moving time. Do your best to schedule your move during the week if you can, even if it means taking a day off of work or making a move as part of your vacation.

Don’t Move in High Season

According to OnCue, movers make about 650 thousand annual moves for Americans. Many of those Americans often move during the summer season. Summer is the prime time for movers because kids are out of school, many people are on vacation, and the weather is nice, so it’s a perfect time for people to change residence. Such a busy season for movers means it’s harder to schedule a moving slot, and it will also cost you more money. Your moving budget can easily decrease by choosing another season to move

Consider Storage

Are there special items you could do without having in your home for a while? You may want to look into a storage facility where you can safely store those items and come back for them later or have them shipped to you. If a close family member or a trusted friend has some extra basement or garage space, they may be able to hold a box or two for you to lighten the load as well.

Get Recycled Moving Items

When packing, avoid spending funds on brand-new boxes and bubble wrap. Recycled items like boxes, crates, and packing peanuts are just as useful for your move, as long as they’re in good condition. You can even use a good moving hack by incorporating things like towels and blankets around your valuable items in place of insulating materials like bubble wrap.

Moving costs money. Unless you must make an emergency move, give yourself enough time to plan properly, so you can save and have more money to spend on your new home. Avoid getting caught up in the weekend or summer move rush by using the above advice.
