4 Ways You’re Losing Money Without Even Knowing

April 20, 2023 by Sam Hayes

Do you ever check your bank account or credit card statement and wonder where all your money went? Do you spend countless hours setting budgets that you always seem to need help to stick to? Are your finances making you miserable? You’re not alone. Money is a source of stress and anguish for a lot of people. To live a reasonably comfortable life, you have to spend more money than you might realize. The next time you set your budget, don’t just think about the money you’ll save up but also the cuts you have to make. After all, you’re probably losing significant amounts of money without even realizing it. Check out these ways you might be losing money without knowing it, and get some tips on how to combat this!

1. Subscription Services

Subscription services are an easy and convenient way to avoid spending a lot of money upfront while still enjoying a product or service. They also often offer a free or low-cost trial period, driving them even more appealing. Once you’ve signed up for a service, it’s easy to forget that you even started the subscription until you check your bank balance. Therefore, be mindful of subscriptions and only buy into the ones you’ll use.

2.  Social Activities

Social activities are crucial for our overall well-being but can be costly. About 75% of people between the ages of 57 and 85 participate in one or more social activities weekly. Therefore, it doesn’t matter what age you are. You’ll always want to have some money set aside for fun. However, that doesn’t mean that you need to overspend.

Going out to eat or grabbing drinks with friends is great, but it will drain your bank account if you do it frequently. The next time you go out, choose a place with reasonable prices or forego it altogether. Go for a walk in nature or visit a friend’s house. The activities will still help you relax without leaving you stressed about money.

3.  Divorce

Few people enter a marriage anticipating a divorce. The reality is that the actual percentage of marriages that end in divorce in the U.S. varies between 40% and 50%. Divorces, while emotionally draining, are also tricky financially. Expenses will quickly add up, from separating your assets to hiring a legal team. Remember to stay aware of the amount of money you’re spending. You don’t want to lose significant amounts of cash without even realizing it.

4.  Child Support

Of course, we don’t just spend money on ourselves. If you have a child, you’re well aware of the expenses you incur. While you might be comfortable with making shortcuts for your own well-being, you probably prioritize making sure they have the best life you can provide.

Single parents feel it the most. Find ways to fight for child support if you’re not receiving it already. You shouldn’t carry the financial burden while your child’s other parent gets to spend their money on themselves. Filing for child support can be stressful, but with the right legal team, you’ll get the compensation you deserve.

If you’re on the other side of the child support situation, where you’re spending 50% or more, you should be able to claim exemption for tax purposes. You might have reached a stage where you don’t even realize how much money you’re spending on child support, and if you’re mindful of it when you file your taxes, you may be able to save.

Spending money can often feel easier than making it. Don’t become complacent about your expenses, and be aware of everything you’re spending. When you’re more mindful about your spending, you’re able to save money and cut down on costs.
