Is the Post Office Open on Easter 2023?

April 3, 2023 by Melissa Batai

Easter this year is on Sunday, April 9th. While many Americans recognize the holiday for its religious and cultural impacts, it is not a federal holiday. Instead, you may have plans with family for part of the day, but otherwise, you’re free to run errands and pursue weekend interests as you would on a regular Sunday. Therefore, you may wonder what businesses will be open on Easter Sunday. For instance, is the post office open on Easter 2023? Unfortunately, that question is tricky because the post office does not deliver mail on Sunday.

Is the Post Office Open on Easter 2023?

Like any other Sunday, the post office will not be open for transactions and will not deliver mail to your house. However, the post office may still deliver priority mail packages on Easter Sunday (depending on your location and the number of packages the post office has to deliver) because it does not recognize Easter as one of their official holidays.

The 2023 holidays recognized by the United States Postal Service (USPS) are:

  • New Year’s Day – observed on Monday, January 2nd
  • Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday – Monday, January 16th
  • Presidents’ Day – Monday, February 20th
  • Memorial Day – Monday, May 29th
  • Juneteenth National Independence Day – Monday, June 19th
  • Independence Day – Tuesday, July 4th
  • Labor Day – Monday, September 4th
  • Columbus Day – Monday, October 9th
  • Veterans Day – Saturday, November 11th
  • Thanksgiving Day – Thursday, November 23rd
  • Christmas Day – Monday, December 25th

Is the Post Office Closed on Good Friday?

While some businesses will only be open half the day on April 7th, 2023, Good Friday, the post office will retain regular business hours. In addition, the post office will pick up and deliver mail to your home on Good Friday.

Are UPS and FedEx Closed?

Likewise, UPS is open on Good Friday but will be closed on Easter Sunday. FedEx will have reduced hours and services from Good Friday through Easter Sunday. (Refer to the FedEx holiday schedule for full details.)

When Did USPS Start Closing on Sunday

Statue of President Taft

The USPS had a long history of delivering mail on Sunday. However, by the 1850s, that tradition had begun to go by the wayside because most people could get urgent messages via telegraph instead.

In 1912, President Taft legally ended Sunday mail delivery. This was supposed to help support workers’ rights (not to have to work every day of the week), but religious groups hailed it as a victory to help reduce work on the Sabbath. Interestingly, until 2013, the USPS delivered mail on Sunday to 7th Day Adventists in California but did not deliver it on Saturday because that is their sabbath day.

Final Thoughts

Is the post office open on Easter 2023? No, but it’s not open on Sunday, so this should not disrupt your usual plans. Your home mail will be delivered on the Saturday before Easter and the Monday after. The post office will also be open on those days, so you should not experience an interruption in services.
