Vacationing On A Budget

February 18, 2023 by Shay Huntley

This week I’ve been gearing up to go out of town. A few days ago was payday, and it didn’t look so great! I missed a few days of work due to being sick and my clients being out of town, but I am not letting that stop me! I love to vacation and use it to recuperate and regenerate. So no matter how bad payday was, I am still going. This means vacationing on a budget, so here’s my plan:

Setting A Budget

Setting a budget is important when you’re in a financial slump. You don’t want to make your finances worse by spending too much money. You need to analyze your account and come up with a figure suitable to have fun on vacation but not put you in a bind! For me, that number is generally around $300. This does not include the price of the hotel stay, which I pay months in advance.

Budget-Friendly Activities

The budget you set needs to cover all of your vacation expenses! Use your budget as a starting point when looking at restaurants and attractions you want to visit. You can look up free attractions and local events to help minimize costs. To ensure max fun, budget for at least one seated dinner and a few fun activities you will enjoy. I’m heading to Chattanooga soon and will visit a few low-cost distilleries. I also want to visit Lookout Mountain Winery for a seated dinner and go shopping. Looking at the prices in advance, I am sure those few activities will not come close to $300.

Stay On Track

There will be some experiences during your trip that are unaccounted for. That is ok. Just ensure you leave some wiggle room in your budget to accommodate them. You also need to make sure you stay on top of your budget. Keep track of how much you spend with each transaction and the remaining balance. This will keep you on top of your budget goals and keep you in good financial shape while on vacation.
