Is The Stock Market Open on Christmas Eve 2022?

December 6, 2022 by Vicky Monroe

Is the stock market open on Christmas Eve?

Christmas Day is a federal holiday, but surprisingly Christmas Eve isn’t. However, some businesses still treat Christmas Eve like a holiday and close in observance of it to allow their employees to focus on enjoying time with their families. So if you have financial transactions or trades you want to take care of before everything shuts down for Christmas, you may be wondering, is the stock market open on Christmas Eve? Here’s what you need to know.

Is The Stock Market Open on Christmas Eve?

Although Christmas Eve isn’t a federal holiday, some businesses still close for the day or limit their store hours to give their employees time to prepare for Christmas. So is the stock market open on Christmas Eve, or is it one of the entities that shuts its doors early?

You’ll be happy to know that both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq stock markets stay open during their regular hours from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve. This allows you to get in those last few trades before the stock market closes for Christmas Day.

Unfortunately the bond market is a different story. It shuts down early at 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve instead of its usual closing time of 5 p.m., so make sure you plan accordingly.

Keep in mind that this year, Christmas Eve falls on a Saturday and Christmas Day falls on a Sunday. When holidays occur over the weekend, the stock and bond markets celebrate them during the week instead. So Christmas Eve will be observed on Friday, December 23rd, and the stock and bond markets will close their doors for Christmas Day on Monday, December 26th.

Stock and Bond Market Holiday Schedule

Looking ahead to 2023, you may be wondering which holidays the stock and bond markets will observe in the new year. The NYSE and Nasdaq usually shut down on ten different holidays, including:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Presidents Day
  • Good Friday
  • Memorial Day
  • Juneteenth
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

The bond market follows the same holiday schedule listed above, but adds two extra holidays—Veterans Day and Columbus Day. The bond market also closes early at 2 p.m. on a few occasions, including Christmas Eve, Black Friday, and New Year’s Eve.

As mentioned above, if a holiday falls on a Saturday, the stock and bond markets will observe it on the preceding Friday. And if a holiday falls on a Sunday, the markets will close their doors on the following Monday. This helps ensure that everyone gets a real day off to spend with their families and rest and recharge.
