Are Banks Closed on Mother’s Day 2022?

May 6, 2022 by Kathryn Vercillo

Are Banks Closed on Mother's Day 2022?

Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 8, 2022. Have you made plans? Is there something that you want to do with your Mom? If so, do you need to go to the bank to make it happen? If so, then you might find yourself wondering, “are banks closed on Mother’s Day 2022?”

Mother’s Day Is Not a Bank Holiday

There are about one dozen federal holidays throughout the year. These holidays are also known as “bank holidays.” Federal services close on those days, and banks close for them as well. However, Mother’s Day is not a bank holiday. So, in terms of closing for that reason, it’s not an issue for this particular holiday. The next upcoming federal holiday is Memorial Day, which is at the end of May.

Mother’s Day Is On Sunday

Mother’s Day is always on the second Sunday of May. Therefore, it always falls on a Sunday. In terms of wondering, “are banks closed on Mother’s Day 2022?” this is definitely relevant. After all, most banks don’t open on Sundays at all. Since they’re never open on Sundays, they’re obviously not open on Mother’s Day either. So, in most instances, banks are closed on Mother’s Day simply because it’s a Sunday.

Some Banks Are Open on Sundays

That said, you’ll find that there are a few banks that do have Sunday hours. Bank branches inside of stores such as Walmart sometimes have Sunday hours, for example. Additionally, there are a handful of banks, including TD Bank and American Savings Bank, that are open on Sundays.

So are banks closed on Mother’s Day 2022 if they’re usually open on Sundays? Most of these banks won’t consider Mother’s Day to be a particular holiday. Therefore, they’ll likely be open this Mother’s Day. However, do note that some banks will choose to close. Therefore, you might want to check with the bank you’d like to go to in advance.

Bank Services Open on Mother’s Day

Why do you need to go to the bank on Mother’s Day? Is it just that you need to take out some cash so that you can pick up a last minute gift? If so, then no worries. ATMs are still open and active, of course.

Do you need to move money between accounts? Online banking is still available as well. That said, since it’s a Sunday, transactions might not go through right away. For example, I can move money between different Wells Fargo accounts immediately even on a Sunday. However, if I wanted to make a payment from Wells Fargo to a credit card, then it wouldn’t go through until Monday.

If you actually need to work directly with a bank representative, then, of course, you’d have to wait until the bank opens.

When Does The Bank Re-Open After Mother’s Day?

Banks will open with regular hours on the Monday following Mother’s Day. This year, that’s on Monday, May 9, 2022. Whether your bank closed for the day because it was Sunday or not, expect regular hours as normal the next day. In other words, Mother’s Day should disrupt your banking much at all.
