Is The Stock Market Open on MLK Day 2022?

January 10, 2022 by Vicky Monroe

Is the stock market opened on MLK Day?

MLK Day marks the birthday of influential civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It’s celebrated on the third Monday of January every year. Since MLK Day is a federal holiday, most banks and government offices close in observance of it. If you’re an investor, you may be wondering, is the stock market open on MLK Day 2022? Or will it be closed like banks and government offices? Here’s everything you need to know about the stock market’s holiday schedule so you can plan your trades accordingly.

Is The Stock Market Open on MLK Day?

Bad news investors—the stock market will be closed on MLK Day this year, which falls on January 17th, 2022. But luckily the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will reopen on January 18th, so you’ll be able to resume trading then. They’ll be open during their regular weekday operating hours from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST, which gives you plenty of time to take care of any business you couldn’t on MLK Day.

You may also be wondering if the bond market is open on MLK Day. Unfortunately, the bond market will. be closed on MLK Day as well, but will reopen the next day. The bond market usually operates from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST on weekdays.

Stock and Bond Market Holiday Hours 2022

If you’re wondering is the stock market open on MLK Day, you may also be curious about the rest of the stock market’s holiday schedule. The stock market is usually closed on ten holidays every year, including:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Good Friday
  • Presidents’ Day
  • Juneteenth National Independence Day (new holiday added for 2022)
  • Fourth of July
  • Memorial Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

The bond market is closed on the same days as the stock market, plus a few additional holidays. It closes for the whole day on Veterans Day, Columbus Day, and Holy Thursday. The bond market also shuts its doors early on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, typically at 2 p.m.

If one of these holidays falls on a weekend, it’s usually celebrated on a different day. Holidays that fall on a Saturday are observed by the stock market the day before on Friday. Holidays that fall on Sunday are typically observed the next day on Monday, unless unusual business conditions exist (such as the end of a monthly or yearly accounting period).

For example, New Year’s Day 2022 fell on a Saturday. But the stock market didn’t observe the holiday on Friday, December 31st because it marked the end of the year and required a full day of trading. As a result, the stock market didn’t celebrate New Year’s Day in 2022, but will take time off for the holiday next year.

The stock and bond markets also close on the weekends, so you’ll need to make your trades during the week.
