Is The Stock Market Open on New Year’s Eve 2021?

December 27, 2021 by Melissa Batai

Is the Stock Market Open on New Year's Eve?

The week after Christmas feels like a dead week, a pause waiting for the time between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. However, many businesses are open during that week, and you can run errands and get things done if you’re not on vacation yourself. If you’re interested in making any last-minute stock moves before the end of the year, you’ll need to know, is the stock market open on New Year’s Eve 2021?

When Does the Stock Market Traditionally Close?

The stock market traditionally is closed on several holidays:

  • New Year’s Day,
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day,
  • Presidents’ Day/Washington’s Birthday,
  • Good Friday,
  • Memorial Day,
  • Independence Day,
  • Labor Day,
  • Thanksgiving Day,
  • Christmas Day

When Does the Stock Market Close Early?

In addition to the above regularly scheduled holidays closures, there are also some days when the stock market closes early:

  • The day after Thanksgiving,
  • Christmas Eve (if it falls on a weekday), and
  • July 3rd (if it and the 4th of July fall on a weekday)

When the stock market closes early, it closes at 1 p.m. EST. (The stock market’s regular business hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST.)

Is the Stock Market Open on New Year’s Eve?

The good news is that the stock market is open regular hours on New Year’s Eve.

Is the Stock Market Open On New Year's Eve

December 31st is the last day you can make last-minute stock moves that can affect your 2021 tax return. You may want to sell losing investments before the end of the year. Then, if you also want to sell some winners, you can offset the gains with the losses from your losing stocks. This helps keep your overall tax bill lower when you file your tax return.

The last day to make those stock sales is on New Year’s Eve, so it’s good the stock market is open. However, before you sell your stocks, whether they are losers or winners, make sure doing so is in the best interest of your investment portfolio.

Is New Year’s Eve a Holiday?

While most people think of New Year’s Eve as a special day, it’s not officially a holiday. That means that not only is the stock market open regular hours, but you’ll likely find most banks also open regular hours. Some businesses such as grocery stores and restaurants may be open on New Year’s Eve but close earlier than normal in the evening.

Final Thoughts

If you’re wondering if the stock market is open on New Year’s Eve 2021, the answer is yes. The stock market will be open regular hours. The stock market is closed on New Year’s Day, as that is one of the nine days the stock market closes. However, since New Year’s Day 2021 is a Saturday, the stock market would have been closed on that day anyway.
