Are The Banks Open on 4th of July 2021?

June 30, 2021 by Kathryn Vercillo

Are The Banks Open on 4th of July 2021?

Many of us take care of banking at the beginning of the month. Therefore, when holidays fall at the start of the month, we can get a little bit confused. Sometimes banks are open on holidays, but sometimes they aren’t. So, right around now, you might find yourself asking “are the banks open on 4th of July 2021?”

4th of July 2021 is a Sunday

If you’ve been planning you’re Independence Day activities, then you might have already noticed that 4th of July 2021 is a Sunday. As you already know, banks are closed on Sundays. Although some branch offices have Sunday hours, that’s the exception rather than the rule. Therefore, whether or not it was Independence Day, banks would be closed on 4th of July 2021. So, the quick and simple answer to “are the banks open on 4th of July 2021?” is no, they are not.

Banks Observe 4th of July on Monday July 5, 2021

Unfortunately, “are the banks open on 4th of July 2021?” isn’t as simple of a question this year as it seems at first. Yes, the banks are closed that Sunday.

However, Independence Day is a federal holiday. When a federal holiday falls on a weekend, we officially observe it on the nearest weekday. Therefore, if the holiday is on a Saturday, we observe it on the Friday before. Similarly, if the federal holiday falls on a Sunday, we observe it on the following Monday.

Therefore, banks will observe 4th of July on Monday July 5, 2021. Banks and credit unions will close for the day. In other words, banks are closed both Sunday, July 4th, 2021 as well as Monday July 5th. The former because it’s a Sunday. The latter because it’s the day the holiday is officially observed.

When To Get Your Banking Done Before Independence Day

If you need to get your start-of-the-month banking taken care of, then you’ll want to do it before the Independence Day weekend. Although some banks and credit unions are opening limited Saturday hours, you should hedge your bets and get your banking done by Friday, July 2nd, 2021. In fact, if bill payment or other timing issues are important, you might even want to try to complete your banking by Thursday, July 1st, 2021, just to be on the safe side.

Banking Activities You Can Do on 4th of July 2021

Even though the answer to “are the banks open on 4th of July 2021?” is no, there are a few things that you can still do on this day. First of all, you can access ATMs. Therefore, you can retrieve money. You can also deposit cash and checks into ATMs. However, remember that the bank won’t process them until they reopen on Tuesday, July 6th, 2021.

Similarly, you can do your online banking on Independence Day. You can move money around between accounts, set up your bill pay, etc. Like with the ATMs, though, the banks aren’t going to process most of those transactions during the holiday weekend. So, while you can set everything up, you’ll see it actually go through on Tuesday, instead.
