Is Costco Closed on MLK Day 2021?

The first few holidays of the year often creep up on us. After all, we’re just catching our breath from the whirlwind of all of the end-of-the-year holidays. And yet, here is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, almost upon us. Is this a holiday when things close down? For example, is Costco closed on MLK Day 2021?

America recognizes MLK Day as one of the federal holidays. It’s the second one of the year, following New Years Day. Therefore, it’s the next holiday up on the calendar. It takes place the third Monday of January. Therefore, it will be on January 18, 2021.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a day to honor and recognize the work of this Civil Rights leader. Many people consider it a good day to volunteer in their communities. Of course, how you do that might like different this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, you might find yourself wanting to get out and help people in some way.

If so, then you might discover some last minute items that you need. Or you might just have the day off of work and want to get your own shopping done. Either way, you could find yourself asking if Costco is open or closed on MLK Day.

Is Costco Closed on MLK Day?

On federal holidays, places like banks and post offices usually close for the day. However, retail stores don’t follow the same holidays. In fact, many retail stores like to stay open on most holidays because that’s when people have time to come and do extra shopping. Therefore, stores like Costco usually stay open except on a couple major holidays throughout the year.

MLK Day isn’t considered one of those major holidays by retail store standards. Therefore, Costco will be open on MLK Day, as will many other stores. Smaller stores might make the decision to close; it’s always up to individual businesses. But big stores like Costco will be open.

Costco doesn’t close for MLK Day. So when does the store choose to close for holidays? These are the seven big holidays of the year when Costco stores close down:

• New Year’s Day
• Easter
• Memorial Day
• Independence Day
• Labor Day
• Thanksgiving
• Christmas

Other than that, you can expect your local Costco store to be open.

Costco Hours

Costco should be open regular hours on MLK Day 2021. Store hours vary by location. Use the Store Locator to find your store’s house. That said, many Costco stores are open from 10 am – 8:30 pm on weekdays. They may open a little later and/or close a little earlier on weekends.

Note that Costco hours have changed due to the coronavirus pandemic. This includes special store hours for people aged 60+. Many stores set aside the time from 9-10 am for those hours. Does Costco Have an MLK Day Sale?

Costco is known for consistently low prices. Therefore, they don’t generally have sales specifically for any holiday. So, no, there won’t be an MLK Day sale at Costco. However, you’re not out of luck. They have regular warehouse sales when you can get the best deals on specific items for a short period of time. The current warehouse sales offers run through January 24, 2021. Therefore, they’ll be available to you on MLK Day this year. These include both online and in-store sales prices.
