Advantages of Building Your Own Home

August 6, 2017 by Alexa Mason

Advantages to Building Your Own Home

A home is undoubtedly the single largest investment that an individual can have. As you look into acquiring one, you should be open to the range of options that are available for you. Is it more affordable to build your own home or to buy?

One of the very first decisions buyers need to make is whether to go shopping for an existing home or building a new one.

Buildit offers a great argument all for why you should self build and sums it all up quite nicely.

Each homebuyer has a wish list or ideas in mind that includes the things they would like to include in the home and some features that the buyer would like, but they can also do without, if necessary.

The cost of building your own home can in fact be more expensive than what you initially planned, so it’s best to be prepared.

Another important consideration is getting self build insurance to avoid those obstacles that may arise during the building process.

Building a new home can however come with a lot of benefits and opportunities for you to save money so even if you don’t have any idea how to build a home on your own, there are things you need to know before you make this huge commitment.

Now there are a lot of advantages of building your own home, here are a few of them:

  • You are likely to get what you wanted for in a home. For a lot of people, this factor alone is enough for them to choose building over purchasing. Since you will have everything you want from the start, there’s no need to spend money on additional expenses in redoing the home. You will be spared from the costs of remodeling and you can have total design control yourself.
  • You can get discounts on materials. When you’re working with suppliers, you can ask for a builder’s discount. Other suppliers may even give you bigger discounts the more you purchase materials from them. It’s also possible to get higher savings on lighting and fixtures.
  • Everything is brand new. Moving into an existing home may come with hidden costs since you will need to make significant home upgrades that may not be that obvious during the purchasing period. Upfront, the cost of building can be high but you can save more money and have a more sustainable home in the long run. New appliances, electrical fixtures, plumbing features and efficient toilets are less likely to give you more health concerns or exposure to toxic materials of an old home – you can go build “green” and you have the option to make upgrades for future technology.
  • You get to manage the construction of your home. You are completely involved in the process – since the home is yours, you can check up on it as much as you’d want. When you have your own builder, they’d want to ensure that it is up to your standards since they know you’d have a personal connection with it. You can oversee the construction, however, once the plan is finalized, you cannot modify it. Be sure to research and double-check the plans before finalizing and moving on to the construction phase.

So there you have it, all of the benefits for considering a self-build.

With a home that is built specifically for your needs, this may be the best possible option if you want to have a home for life. Of course there are other alternatives to living in a house.. Here is a nice list of alternatives we’ve covered here for you.
