May 16, 2017 by Alexa Mason

MC Hammer's net worth

There have been many stars that only had a brief moment in the spotlight. Many of these celebs are one-hit wonders like MC Hammer. You may remember his hit song “U Can’t Touch This” and his huge parachute pants. What you may not know is that this star has seen some substantial financial trouble over the years.

Although he was once a fairly big star at one time, MC Hammer’s net worth may not be what you think. So, where is the star now and how rich (or poor) is he?

Profession: Former musician/performer
Age: 55
Source Of Wealth: Music career

MC Hammer’s Career

Stanley Kirk Burrell (MC Hammer) was born on March 30, 1962 in Oakland, California. The short-lived star never had an easy life though. He and his siblings lived in a single-parent home in California and he grew up poor.

When he was just 11 years old MC Hammer was first discovered and given his first job as the Oakland A’s batboy. He served as the team’s batboy until 1980 (when he turned 18). As you may know, a few years later he was kickstarting his music career.

Many people don’t know that the star started out as a gospel singer/rapper and went into mainstream music later on. His first album was released in 1986 and it was called “Feel My Power” and, unless you’re a huge MC Hammer fan, you probably haven’t heard anything on the album. 1988 was the year that brought Hammer’s greatest hit “U Can’t Touch This.”

“U Can’t Touch This” was Hammer’s claim to fame. Since it was released in 1988 it has been used for television commercials, in films and has become one of the most well-known songs in the world. He went on to release a number of other albums (he’s released one as recent as 2014) but not everything was easy for MC Hammer’s career.

In fact, there was a lot of financial turmoil for MC Hammer after he gained his riches. So, what is MC Hammer’s net worth now and how did he recover from bankruptcy?

MC Hammer’s Net Worth

MC Hammer's net worth MC Hammer’s finances are a complicated matter. He went from rags-to-riches-to-rags within the matter of a decade (pretty much). MC Hammer’s net worth was tens of millions of dollars during his popular years (1988-1998) and he was one of the most recognized faces in the world.

Now many people know his hit song “U Can’t Touch This” and the story of how he lost all his cash. His net worth now sits at about $1.5 million and he doesn’t have much to show for his time in the spotlight. Why? Well, what it boils down to is the lifestyle he chose to live was too flashy to maintain for a long period of time, given his income at the time.

There have been many stars, like MC Hammer, who have gone bankrupt and lost virtually everything after becoming famous. In many cases it is simply because they don’t know how to manage their newfound riches. Take Hammer, for example. He grew up in project housing in Oakland with a HUGE family and then had a net worth of millions. Not many people would handle such a change very well.

The good news is is that MC Hammer seems to be doing okay for himself now (and he’s still getting hits on “U Can’t Touch This”). Although it’s been a tough road, he’s becoming financially sound over time.
