  • want to do Disney on the cheap

I've been on disability since 2014 so my last vacation was Disney with my teenage DD in '13. I've managed to save over 20k in an emergency fund and have 600k in retirement savings. I'm 48. I'd like to take a vacation since it's been 5 years and have saved 4k towards that. It will be a little more expensive to do Disney because of all the walking, I'll have to rent a scooter or I will fall from low blood pressure. But even with that, I love it there and I think it's probably one of the most handicapped accessible places you can go, right?

So DBF and I are looking to go in Oct when it's cooler, cheaper and less crowded. Anyone able to recommend an inexpensive but nice place to lodge? If you go mid-week, airfare is low. I've always rented a house or condo but IDK if they'll accept mid-week. Any suggestions on how to do this on the cheap are welcomed.

or is it completely crazy for someone dependent on disability to even take a vacation?

I personally find it more noteworthy that FLA has saved over 600k in retirement funds while on disability.

thank you but I saved that before becoming disabled. Once you're disabled, you can't add money to retirement accts, which really sucks, lol

October is a wonderful time to go! And yes, Disney is very accessible for those with disabilities. You can often get in shorter lines. Although in October the lines are very minimal.

There are Disney forums where I'm sure someone has asked this question. I do know that hotels and villas can be less expensive in Kissimmee Fl, if you will have a car. If you don't have a rental car, you will want to stay closer.

Unfortunately, this simply isn't true anymore. Essentially, there is no longer a "slow" time thanks to various festivals and aggressive marketing and discounting. October is particularly busy, especially on weekends, because of the Food and Wine Festival, among other things.

Where to stay? I'd rent a house or condo. Some owners won't do mid-week rentals but if they have availability, they'd rather rent than not rent. You just have to inquire with a bunch of owners.

Be sure to rent your scooter from an outside company, not from Disney. It will be much cheaper and you will have use of the scooter 24/7, not just within the parks each day. Of course, you will need to have a vehicle with which you can transport the scooter around.

disboards.com is THE place to ask questions and get information. There is a disabilities forum there specifically for accessibility info.

How many people are going? The 3 of us do a week for about $3,000 so unless there are 4-5 of you, $4,000 will be plenty.

I used to be on Disboards but forgot all about them, thanks for the reminder.

only two of us are going and I only have to pay half. I did find a condo in Windsor Hills (I've stayed there before) for $100 a night all included and he'll do mid-week, making airfare lower. I don't think it's even worth looking at hotels for cheaper when you factor in you've got an extra bedroom, laundry, a place to cook and room to relax. So that might work out.

thanks for the scooter advice, I didn't even think of going out of the park to rent

I was there during Food and Wine Festival, but I will grant you that trip was ten years ago. I'd still have to think that with kids in school it still would have to be less busy than July or late December. But you are the expert...

You should be able to find something cheaper though that isn't a bad deal. One other place to consider is Windsor Palms. That is the first development build by the same builder so it's a couple of years older. Just be sure you're getting a ground floor unit and that there are no stairs to get to it.

Disney World is a whole different place than it was 10 years ago. The crowds have multiplied tremendously. "Slow" season now resembles what the "busy" season used to look like years ago. Summer has actually become a slower time. Not what one would expect because of school schedules but some of the best discounts are now in July and August because business has been soft during that time the past couple of years.

The crowds are only going to get worse as they open Toy Story Land at Hollywood Studios next month and then really peak when they open Star Wars Galaxy's Edge at the Studios next month. And Animal Kingdom is still packing people in to Pandora World of Avatar which opened a year ago.

You've got some good advice but one word of warning, don't necessarily think October will be cooler. We went one time and one time only in Oct around Columbus Day, eegads, it was in the mid to high 90's every day and humid.

We're from Ohio so wasn't expecting that. Duh me thought it was fall, but it was clearly still summer there!

hmm, maybe November is better crowd and temp wise. What do you think, Steve?

You could always try to crawl over/under the fence and get in for free. Maybe rent a Mickey costume and walk right in?

I think I'm too short to pull off Mickey

Forget about the crowd issue. Just assume that Disney World is always crowded. There is no longer a slow season. It just doesn't exist anymore.

Food and Wine runs through mid-November (the 12th this year I think) and the Magic Kingdom Christmas Party starts right after Halloween. On party nights, the Magic Kingdom closes early - 6pm I think - so keep that in mind.

As for weather, you never know. We went in November 2 years ago and it was 90 degrees every day. Now it wasn't quite as humid and oppressive as August, but it was still darn hot.

Go whenever it works best for you.
