  • What do I do?

We had an unexpected bonus at DH work. We saved the bulk of it, and I earmarked already 5% of it for spending and set it aside in my savings account to be spent. Paid taxes and savings but I have an extra $15k I'm trying to decide what to do with.
    Option 1 spend it
    Option 2 save it all
    Option 3 save $10k and spend $5k

We are comfortable. Have EF. Funded 529 fully. The extra $10k I was thinking dumping $5k into each kids UGMA and $5k extra for me to spend.

Or I can spend it all

I guess I feel bad since I earmarked spending already and I'm adding to it. But saving the rest of it seems responsible enough.

Goes along the lines of pulling back on saving

I'd have no issue using it for something fun, or from some sort of upgrade to the house.
You said that you are fine financially, so this is truly extra money.

Give, save, or spend - that's pretty much all you can do with money. Since you said you're comfortable I think it's great if you can help out your kids and have some fun with the "found money". I will caveat this response that my first reaction was - fund your Roth IRAs for 2024, but I'm going to assume you have that covered.

I think if there’s something you’ve been eyeing or wanting - now is a good time to treat yourself!

Knowing that other goals are set, I’d probably save half and set half aside for fun spending.

If the answer is to spend it, what does that look like? Do you have something in mind for that money? I wouldn't go searching for ways to spend 15K but if there's something you've been thinking about doing but didn't want to spend the money, nothing wrong with using this as your justification to do it.

If someone handed me 15K today with no strings attached and said I had to spend it this week, I'd really have to give some serious thought to what to use it for.

You've got the bases covered, so spending it doesn't really hurt anything. Personally, my answer would be a blend of all 3 options -- I'd drop it all in savings to sit until I decide more fully how to use some portion of it. Perhaps a trip, or a home improvement that's been delayed for a while, or maybe an extravagance/"want" item that has previously been unjustifiable.

So I was sleeping on the spending. $5k to upgrading travel this summer on a planned trip $5k on an extra weekend trip i was thinking about but not funded yet. $5k on a trip with BFF where i pay for everything. She's sick and I want to do this with her if she can this summer. That $5k is on the maybe scale since it depends on her. Fingers crossed she can do it.
