  • Incorrect bank deposit

I was doing my monthly financial update today and I noticed that two deposits were made into my personal savings account on 7/27. The total amount deposited was $416.10.
I don't use that account much, and normally only keep a few hundred dollars in it, so the large deposit stuck out.
Turns out that a woman with my same last name deposited the checks on the same day.

I'm surprised that she hasn't noticed that the money wasn't in her account. It's been almost 10 days since this happened.
I'll be calling the bank tomorrow to have it fixed, but this is something that I would have noticed almost immediately if I were depositing money.

I only balance my checkbook monthly when the statement comes. I wouldn’t notice an error until then.

Good eye. I'm another that actually balances my 2 checkbooks every month even though my adult kids laugh at it! Between my checking accounts and my lengthly Visa card bill, I've had my share of mistakes by both the bank and businesses I charge at. I also check my accounts online almost daily for unusual activity. Like you, I'd also contact the bank and have it corrected. Eventually it would be found anyway.

I didn't notice this deposit because I don't really use the account in question, but when I go to the bank specifically to deposit money, I pull up my app and make sure it deposits correctly before I leave the parking lot.

I never go to the bank to deposit money. I do that on the app so I get confirmation right away. It's been many years since I went into the bank to make a deposit. Before mobile deposits were a thing, I made my deposits at the ATM so I also got a receipt. Both of those methods are safer and more accurate than using a teller. Had that person done the app or ATM, this wouldn't have happened. This was human error on the part of the teller.

I called the bank and they took care of it.
