  • I left my job last week

I got a new job about 6 months ago. At first I was excited to take on a new challenge at a new company, but things quickly went south there.
Half the company was recently let go which made the remaining employees workloads unmanageable. People were working all hours of the night and all weekend long. One of my coworkers actually had a mental breakdown and had to go to therapy.
People were also quitting left and right.
The company wasn't paying its bills and most of the suppliers and vendors put them on credit hold. We couldn't get in product or have any services done.
Multiple former employees had pending lawsuits against the company for breach of contract and for defamation.
The final straw for me was a new boss who would call me at 1AM for work related topics. At the end she tried to not pay me a sign on bonus until I threatened to sue.

This place was the classic definition of toxic.
I wouldn't be shocked if they went out of business within the next year.

I've been off for a few weeks now, and it has been wonderful.
I imagine I won't be off for long, as I've already had two in-person interviews and have had multiple phone conversations with recruiters.

I am thankful that I am in a financial position to walk away from a place like that. Most of my former coworkers had no choice but to deal with it.

    Wow BJ. Thats insane.

Who thinks its okay to call people at 1:00am? And why were they having financial trouble?

Sounds like they’re circling the drain. Good for you for jumping out and not going down with them.

Management always seem to only look at the balance sheet before cutting staff. They never consider the tremendous impact on the remaining staff who then have to take on the work of the folks not there anymore.

And clearly there were numerous other issues with the place.

Good luck with whatever comes next.

Glad to hear you were able to get out.

In hindsight were there any warning signs or did it go downhill pretty much after you started?

It's not okay to call people at 1am unless you are working for a 24/7 company, and you are on call.
That wasn't the case with this job.

Their financial troubles stemmed from multiple things.
Too much inventory and not the correct inventory due to no oversight or systems of controls to manage it.
Selling product at a loss and no systems to make sure the correct products were shipping or that they were collecting on due invoices.

There were some warning signs fairly early on, but I discounted them since I was the new guy and didn't know what I didn't know yet.
A few months ago when the mass layoffs happened and a bunch of others quit shortly after, that's when it really started to get bad.

That sounds rough. This is a prime example of how managing one's finances well can create the freedom of options - the choice to leave, the ability to take time off, etc. Congrats on the new opportunities as well!
