  • Can you fire your insurance broker without changing policy providers?

Short question: Can you fire your insurance broker without changing policy providers? As in, could I move to doing business directly with the insurance provider and remove a broker as a 3rd party? Any idea how to initiate that process?

Background rant that doesn't add any detail that would affect the answer to the question:

For the first time since I started buying real estate, I have all my policies with one lender. Every time I'd have them quoted, one lender wouldn't carry this policy, another lender wouldn't carry that policy, one might take them all but the rates on my primary were double, etc etc.
So this spring I got a lender referral and decided to have him quote everything out. Rates were good, found a company that would take all of my policies for an overall savings (albeit small), but it was with Progressive who I'd had for car insurance in the past and in my experience, they quote you great rates and then dramatically increase at first renewal. Expressed this concern to the broker and he acted surprised, said he uses them all the time and thats not been his experience and if they were to do that, we'll just find someone else. So I agree.

Fast forward 6 months. My first auto renewal comes and it is DOUBLE the first policy term. I drive an 07. The car is worth maybe $5,000 and they want me to go from paying $220/6 mo to $445/6 mo. That is the equivalent of paying 1/5 of the value of my car in insurance every year. On top of that, my winnebago doesn't come through on the renewal at all, they had dropped it without even notifying me. So I reach out to the broker, ask what's up with the Winnie and what the savings to drop to liability only on the car would be. Says he'll look into it.

That was over a month ago. Followed up a couple times, nothing. On Nov. 1 I logged on to progressive and adjusted my policy myself and then emailed again to let him know I did so, but still needed to know what was going on with my RV. Still nothing. I know he hasn't dropped off the face of the earth because the person who connected us did so through FB and I can see he's been posting. Maybe I'm petty but I'm mostly annoyed at the thought of someone getting paid off my renewal when they can't even take the time to find out why my coverage was dropped.

Sounds like a cruddy broker AND your insurer doubled rates and dropped policies. Sounds like it's time to set both out on the curb.

I've been with State Farm for a long time, since about 2007. I wasn't into the "agency" model, but it's actually come in handy. For a quote, I scanned our existing dec pages to the agent. No pecking in VINs or names, or none of that. Just get me a quote, please. They were on it. Their pricing has been consistently good for the 13 years we've had them, and premiums have eased over time especially as the drivers got older If there's ever any questions, calling the agent's office is a one-and-done affair.

I was rear-ended in September and SF has been awesome. Of course it turns out that the at-fault driver didn't pay his premiums that month and Progressive denied coverage. The adjuster was a total ass and wouldn't call me back. So I called SF and they handled all the claims jockeying, coverage dispute, etc.
      History will judge the complicit.

I would certainly ditch the broker. He doesn't do anything that you can't do on your own. Shopping for insurance online is simple today. I see no reason to involve a human in the process (who just takes a cut of the money). The policy is issued by the insurance company. You pay your premium to the insurance company. What do you need the person for? Keep it simple and do it yourself.

        * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
        * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
        * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

Well as noted in my backstory, its not simple. I have 4 home policies (one of which was built in 1900), my daily driver and an 85 winnebago and I have "dangerous" dogs which a lot of places won't cover. Dealing with 3-5 separate companies/payment dates/etc is a huge pain. Each time I decide to shop around, its incredibly time intensive calling, providing the details, sending current policies, getting call backs to answer additional questions... only to have most say sorry we can't take one part of this or all. And then when I do switch, I have to get the new info out to 4 different mortgage companies, make sure they update their records. Broker would 120% be worth it to me if he were doing his job.

In that case, I'd be searching for a new broker. Is your current broker a one-man shop or part of a larger organization? Could you just switch people within the company if that wouldn't be too awkward?

In my experience most brokers are independent contractors and they pay a fee to use a company's name, software, etc but I'll look more into it - that would definitely be a more seamless process than starting over

Exactly. Maybe you could find another broker who works under the same company umbrella.
