  • 401k choices help please

These are my DH's choices. Current we do 25% into the four that are in red. There are new choices now. These are all the choices. With of course some target and bond and money market I didn't write down. Suggestions? Should we keep with 25% into all four categories? Think international might do well this year?

    COL DIVIDEND INC Z (GSFTX)
    FID GROWTH CO K (FGCKX)
MAINSTAY LG CAP GR I (MLAIX)
    SPTN 500 INDEX INST (FXSIX)

FID LOW PRICED STK K (FLPKX)
PERKINS MID CP VAL I (JMVAX)
    TRP MID CAP GROWTH (RPMGX)

    ALZGI NFJ SMCPVL IS (PSVIX)
    VANG EXPLORER ADM (VEXRX)

    FID DIVERSIFD INTL K (FDIKX)
    HARBOR INTL INST (HAINX)

I was doing 25% in each asset class out of laziness. I'm not particularly fond of anything, so i don't mind skewing but I'm not sure international will be so great so maybe the same 25% split.

You don't have 4 asset classes, you have 4 mutual fund categories. Three of your funds are US stocks (1 asset class), and one fund is Intl stocks (2nd asset class). Do you wish to own bonds? Do you wish to own other asset classes? Do you perhaps own them in IRAs or taxable accounts?

Myself, I would dump the actively managed in favor of the index, where possible.

          75% stocks, 25% bonds?

Yeah I'm not doing bonds. So 25% of the contributions goes to each asset class. I don't like any of the bond funds. I prefer to just keep bonds in our Roth IRAs or cash in taxable accounts balances our holdings. I'm picking the best of the choices available.

So I'm preferring 4 mutual funds of the choices given. Preference of 1 per category. Unless someone tells me one of the mutual fund categories or fund is so superb i should be 100% in. But even then it'll be a pain to rebalance the rest of the portfolio.

You are letting your knowledge of details get in the way of making a good decision.

You need to focus on asset allocation before picking individual investments.

Nope I just segregated out the asset allocation. The rest my DH leaves in total stock market ETFs and his play money. So we don't balance our portfolio normally.
