So I blew on here a week ago asking what I thought was a simple question. Learned how dumb I was and dove into fixing things up. The help I received has allowed me to get religion and take a different approach to saving, spending and money in general. I had no real plan for 2014 other than to pay some debt and spend the rest. Now, I will pay all debt except the house, set up a monthly allotment to save for the non-monthly expenses (used to just go on a CC). I also cut $12,792 out of the annual budget. Here's what happened (the numbers are money left over at the end of each month):

Hope it lets me post images. If not, then I'll do it later.

Jan and Feb are still dramatically negative because I am still carrying all the debt. That all gets paid off at the end of Feb. Dramatic swing from $39,000 overspent to $1,495 underspent. That $1,495 isn't a lot, but it makes me feel a lot better. Let's hope I can stick to the plan.

Thanks for the help and continued support.

    Tom

Great job! Feels good to be more in control doesn't it? Think of it this way: +$1495 doesn't seem like a lot, but multiply that habit by a lifetime versus any negative number, and you're in the running for true wealth and being able to truly afford more meaningful experiences.

Great job again. Keep working at it!

Would you rather have red or black? LOL. It's better than being in debt even with a big shovel.

Tom, we're happy all the great advice the community has provided, will help you get your finances in place. It's great that you do earn a very good income, but, with some care and adjustments, you'll be able to really be financially secure as you should be with such income. There are categories where you'll probably not make huge changes, but even 2-3 budget tweaks can really get you out of the 'reds'.

We're all rooting for you, keep up the good work
