I wouldn't move with a (newer) TV either. They are so fragile.

Not really. Maybe if you're throwing wii motes at it or dropping it. I wouldn't use a mover though, so the main issue is space. It will take up most of the back seat of your car, but you can pile stuff up on the seat side to help weigh the back down. can cover the screen with a towel or board. you can use seatbelts, etc to restrain it as well. If you have a suv or van, just place it on the floor. Generally you should stand it up.

All of that is overkill though. It would take a serious accident for you to break a tv inside of a passenger vehicle... in which case, I'm guessing the tv is one of the least of your worries.

But I understand the OP's logic. In all honesty, why would you buy a new dresser, couch, desk, desktop computer, etc right before you move? You generally wouldn't.

And to answer the question, I'd just dump the money into an investment account. I actually don't have very many consumer desires. If I want it, I'll simply buy it, but I generally don't "want it". for example, I have an 8 year old LCD tv. Do I plan on getting a new one? Nope, not unless it breaks.

No way am I driving cross country with two kids and a dog and a tv that wouldn't fit in the car with a family of four and dog.

Does dh have a savings account all his own? If not, open one. Let him spend it as he sees fit, when he sees fit. You are right that it would be best if he bought the tv after you are moved and settled.

We kept the boxes for our plasma tv's. Movers packed them back up and they arrived just fine at our destination. But I don't see any reason to buy until after the move either.

If it were me, I'd buy new furniture...my 16 year old couches really show wear. But next, I'd put the money on the mortgage. Can't you put some to the tv and the rest to something else?

I think we will have to agree to disagree. (I suppose it also depends on what kind of TV, but I am thinking of more of the PITA variety. I doubt our TV Would fit in the back seat of our car - that kind of thing).
