  • Dave Ramsey Says: Dump Your Boyfriend

Okay so this is making the rounds on social media, I'm posting it here, because part of me loves and hates Dave Ramsey.

A caller named Hayley had been living with her boyfriend for a little over six years. She graduated in December 2023 with about $160,000 in student loan debt and had paid it down to roughly $90,000 by the time of the call (while working as a nurse). Her boyfriend earns $250,000 a year and covers their rent, which has allowed her to put most of her paycheck toward the loans. He will not propose until she is completely debt-free.

In response, Dave Pretty much told her to dump her boyfriend. He called her a “princess” who deserves more and described the dynamic as toxic/unhealthy. He also criticized living together unmarried as creating financial pressure that makes it harder to leave a flawed relationship, noted that they already seem aligned on hating debt He did basically suggest that the boyfriend might simply be misguided and suggested trying premarital counseling to get aligned—but said that the boyfriends the ultimate answer was “I won’t marry you until you pay off the debt,” then she should leave.

Link to the actual show where dave says the thing, here.

    Here the actual transcript:

Hayley: I live with my boyfriend for a little over 6 years and I graduated December 2023 with about $160,000 of student loan debt. I’ve paid off a lot. I have about $90,000 left.

Dave: Way to go. … What’s your career?

    Hayley: I’m a nurse.

Dave: Oh, good for you. …

Hayley: And my boyfriend makes $250,000 a year, but he does not want to propose until I’m completely debt-free.

Dave: Interesting. You’re not going to like me. If you were my daughter, you want to know what I would tell you?

    Hayley: What?

    Dave: Dump him.

Hayley: Yeah, I mean, he’s a great guy, but—

The worse part about this is that a lot of people listen to and follow Dave Ramsey, if he tells this woman to dump her boyfriend over this, other people will start to think its a good idea.

Dump him and replace him with what?
Dude is top shelf. Earning $250K a year and has standards that he won't budge on.
