I’m not so sure that’s anything new. The article is talking about 18-25 year olds. I think many, if not most, of us weren’t doing a ton of saving at that age. Heck I didn’t finish school and start working until I was almost 29. You’re not even out of college until 21 and 25 or more for grad school. At that point your focus is on getting a job, paying student loans, maybe getting your own place, affording your car, and just trying to get established. Saving is low on the list until things get rolling.

Exactly. What's old is new. 10-15 years ago, the same was said of us lazy millennials who weren't saving a dime & were living out of parents' basements, worried about avocado toast & lattes. Now we're hailed as leaders in the FIRE movement, yadda yadda.

It's nothing earthshaking. The wheel turns on and on.

Makes sense to me. Most 18-25 year-olds haven't suffered yet. They should be living in the moment and experiencing the world, and figuring out what they want to do in life.
        History will judge the complicit.

Maybe but if you read one of the linked articles disconnect between retirement savings and retirement is linked to pensions caused people to retire earlier. Now people think they will work until 70 until something happens where they can't. And pensions are no longer a given
