Re the 2 star rating: Your money is safe, it's FDIC insured. But it could mean down the road Emigrant won't be able to keep up with the interest rate game. I'd just wait and see if that happens before making any big moves.

Is it true that Emigrant will be raising thier rates to 5.15% later this month?

I have an Emigrant account and I have not gotten one of these notices. I recently got an e-mail saying the revamped site will require the current site to be down from 21-24 July. I've moved most of my savings to HSBC long ago but kept my Emigrant Account open and modestly funded as they've remained competitive. I've moved on from INGDirect long ago, I recommend you do the same.

I sure hope so. I've been watching all the other internet bank interest rates go up and up, and ING doesn't seem to want to stay competitive. I joined ING a few months ago and they have raised rates a bit each month, but I think now they are still only at 4.35% or so. I'm hanging on to my ING account for 2 more months to see what their response is to the competition. If they still don't want to play the interest game, I'm taking my money elsewhere.

I've been dissapointed in ING for the interest rate lag and also they never responded to an email I sent them requesting information on what they are doing to protect customer information. I raised the question to them after one of their employees laptops was stolen from his home, and it had thousands of customer records on it. It's been several weeks and no response. Guess they've swept this issue under the rug!

I got my new password ID in the mail from Emigrant today (to use on the new website)...

On the bottom of the mailer, it says "as of July 28 the APY will be 5.15"

It does seem that way. A lot of good comments in this thread, but it woould take a day for someone new to read through it all. It really is a history of what online banks have been doing these past months.

Why would Emigrant announce they were raising rates later on and just not raise them?

Maybe they're hoping to get people bouncing over in anticipation of the rate change? A thought.

I just got mine today. It should come this week as its a combined announcement regarding the new website coming this weekend and then the bump in rates the following weekend. Ciao

I'd say its a hot button topic lately so there maybe an uncoordinated industry wide desire to enhance security to insure image is not tarnished. ED has been planning their upgrades for awhile. ING's is more recent. HSBC also bumped up security a bit. There might be more to it than what is in the public domain, hackers are always challenging security so a good bank should always be seeing improvements in this area to stay one step ahead.

Everyone says the $25 bonus from ING is one of the biggest differences between the two banks and that's why they chose ING. Couldn't you open an account with ING Direct, get the bonus, then withdraw your money and start an account with Emigrant Direct?
