I just got in... its nice.... easy to use....
tight security though... they ask you for 10 different security questions... so I recommend writing them all down , because each time you log in, you are asked a series of 2 random (out of your 10) security questions....

Just use the site in the off hours. I got in last night and it worked like a charm. You can send them an e-mail and they should get back to you promptly. They maybe swamped this week as its the big roll out of the new site.

I've held my tongue on this for a while now but, I'm sorry, I just don't see the big deal. To me, this thread has long outlived its usefulness. The 'battle' is not between ING and Emigrant. ING lags behind most other offerings in terms of APY and Emigrant has never had a solid site or good customer service. Couple that with the fact that the new site has issues (still) and customer service has apparently gone into the toilet, and I just don't get why anyone would be excited about either.

And before you say, but Emigrant has a new yield of 5.15%...

OneUnited offers 5.25% (and has been)
Apple Bank offers 5.15% (and has been)

And I would expect that you will soon see GMAC, HSBC, Amboy, etc. reaching these levels as well.

[Addendum: GMAC up to 5.10% See complete list of rates here.]

i would say to even try your bank. i had signed up with emigrant for their pretty high interest on cd's and went to my bank to close it out- it was maturing that week- and they offered me a nice sized 5.52% for 6 mos up against 5.35% for a yr at emigrant. you never know- its good to just go in and ask.

HSBC which has been a leader is now slacking off!!! Hopefully they dont become another ING!

Also, the fed meets on the 8th, any thoughts on if there is going to be another rate hike?

HSBC has given me 75 USD in bonus funds, has excellent customer service, has a solid ATM & Branch network in the mid-atlantic, banks in all major US cities not to mention throughout the world (HSBC stands for Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation). They are the 5th largest corporation in the world and the 3rd largerst bank in the world after their merger w/ Household Plc of England. They are offering a healthy rate that is just 10-20 basis points behind other online banks. I would not count them out just yet nor call them an ING which is 70-80 basis points behind, is exclusively an online bank and tries to making up by marketing orange colored trickets online and in their coffee shops. If they did not have the orange colored harley in the lobby of their Wilmington HQ and Orange Fiberglass balls everywhere maybe they could afford a few more basis points in their savings rate.

I wouldn't say that HSBC is slacking off. If their transfer times didn't blow, I would probably have more of my money with them.

Let me clarify, I wasn't putting HSBC down at all.... I do have an account with them and love their service and web site. I have access to 4 local ATMs and branches where I live....

I am just simply disappointed that they are not near the top in rates any longer...

Something that I haven't seen mentioned that will be of great interest to those considering opening an Emigrant account is that they have done away with the snail mail confirmation in the sign up process. It now takes a couple of days to confirm the account instead of several weeks as it has in the past which is a lot more convenient for all involved.

wow! I was unaware about this. I dont have an ED account. Does ED have multiple linked accounts like ING?

ED allows up to four external funding accounts to be linked to your savings account, but according to their website the funding accounts must be personal checking accounts. I have no idea if there is any way around this stipulation. I think you have to send in a voided check to complete the process, so probably not.

I can't believe how incredibly bad ING is in this race to have good rates. What a shame that ING turned out to be so bad - I guess I'm going to try for ED - or HSBC - they are doing well too, right?
