  • Shopping Insurance Results

When I purchased my Tacoma in 2020, the cost of insurance at the time was around $780 for 6 months. That was twice the $350 I paid for the Frontier, but it was a 20 year old truck. Since then, it has steadily increased about $100 each renewal. This current renewal was $1,517. I finally decided enough was enough. I dedicated Thursday to speaking with every insurance company in the county. I handed each agent a copy of my insurance coverage papers for both the truck and house, with the price redacted. This is what I came up with:
    Vehicle House
    Farmer's $1,517 $1,296
    State Farm $617 $1,594
    Farm Bureau $972 $1,176
    Country Financial $1,000 $2,555
    Allstate $1,052 $1,701
    ALFA $1,318 $2,527

Afterwards I went back to Farmer's and presented them with the pricing and asked if they were still interested in keeping my business. He said Farmer's couldn't do any better, but he was also an agent for Progressive. He worked up a quote and it was $458. That price includes an 8% fee for him. It also includes increasing my liability from $50,000 to $100,000!

I've heard mixed opinions about Progressive, but considering I haven't needed to make a claim in 25 years, I think I am fine with them for now.

Ultimately I have been negligent in not shopping around (ever). I haven't started to consider how much money I may have wasted, but it is probably in the order of several thousand dollars.

Why not shop around to Costco American Family Connect? I found them the most competitive until now. The rates for teen drivers is ridiculous.

I wasn't aware of them. I am not a Costco member either, but that could change if they have better rates.

Most of these "great deals" or budget insurance companies use these low rates just to get you in the door so to speak. Come the following year rates will be back to what you were paying prior, or even higher. Bait and switch at its finest.

Another point to consider is how much coverage you have. The minimum varies by state. In Georgia the minimum is 25/50/25. I previously had 50/100/50 but upped it to 100/300/100 and am still 1/3 the cost of what I would have been paying. Roughly 70% of drivers only have the minimum, so having uninsured / underinsured is also important.

Saving that much while actually doubling your coverage is a massive win! Drake makes a fair point about teaser rates, but honestly, even if Progressive bumps it up a bit next year, you’re still way ahead of what Farmers was charging. Shopping around every couple of years really is the only way now
