  • Thinking about upgrading your HVAC system?

Average cost is around $11,000 but it can vary widely depending on the brand, the labor costs, size and age of your home, and your location

How Much Does an HVAC System Cost? (2026 Guide)

Unless you've got a really old outdated HVAC system it's rare that you have to replace the entire thing. In most cases it's either the furnace / air handler that goes bad and can be removed and replaced with minimal sheet metal work and often keeping the existing AC coil and condenser. Or, the AC condenser or coil goes bad and they have to be replaced with no work on the furnace / air handler. Typically the ductwork doesn't need replaced and not all components in the within system need to be replaced.

We have a family relative who is going to have to replace both AC units in her house. She was quoted $20k for the pair. No clue on size or scope of replacements, but it sounds like it is in line with your post.

Whole lot more here in California! I recently replaced our furnace and thought about adding A/C but we don't get that many super hot days where I live so I said no. Total cost for the furnace only was just over $8,000 and I ended up going with the Costco approved HVAC dealer. There price was basically the same as everyone else plus I got a free $1,100. Shop Card back from Costco. Good deal all around.
