  • Current Homeowner found previous owner's detailed notes

    Here is an interesting story.
Have you ever discovered something in your home or car from a previous owner that ended up being a valuable record of information?

Bought my house seven months ago and last week the heat in the master bedroom just stopped working. Dead. Nothing on the thermostat, no obvious reason. Was already mentally preparing for an HVAC bill when I remembered there was a random binder in the garage that came with the house. Never opened it because I figured it was old manuals for appliances I didn't care about. Opened it Previous owner had documented literally everything. Every appliance with purchase date and warranty info. A hand-drawn diagram of the sprinkler zones with which valve controls what. The paint colors for every room with the exact brand and finish. And right there on page 4- a note that the master bedroom is on a separate zone with its own damper in the basement utility room, and that it sometimes needs to be manually reset after a power surge.

Found the damper. Reset it. Heat came back in ten minutes. I don't know who you are but you clearly cared about this house and about whoever came after you. Saved me probably $300 minimum on an HVAC call and honestly just made me feel like the house was loved before I got it. Be this person when you sell

One of my hobbies includes paranormal investigating (ghost hunting). We visited a house of lady who claims she has seen plates thrown across the room, and picture frames knocked off the wall, in addition to hearing someone run up and down her halls at night. She also has a 10 year old son who had behavioral issues.... so you draw your own conclusions.

Anyway while climbing through the attic looking for any signs of raccoons or other wildlife, we found a shoe box full of letters. It ends up the previous owner had a long term (like 30 years) affair. Details of their rendezvous and the date based on the postal marks.

It's worth noting she also kept the firearm her ex-husband used to kill himself (still unclean in the evidence box).

At another residence, the home owner called us extremely upset the week after our visit because he claimed to have found a firearm and african tribal mask in his attic. He claimed we planted it there. He also claimed in our initial interview to having have had fallen off the wagon a week prior when he bought an eight ball.

The most interesting thing I have found in my own personal residence was a button for an air show in South Alabama about 10 miles from where I grew up. It was in an air vent.

That's a diamond in the rough finding all that info! Goes to show you bought the house from an honest and upfront person. I'd like to think I'd leave similar info when we sell our house someday. Even the paint codes are great.

What a treasure you have found. I did that with the house I lived in with my ex. Anything new from paint to flooring to appliances, etc. I need to start that with this house. Thanks for the reminder.
