  • Using Apps to save money at restaurants

Many restaurants have Apps that will offer discounts and even free food offers.
Some of them are worth checking out.

Also, if you are a Costco member, they also have an App.
There are many coupons and discounts available through them for a wide range of eateries

I know some people think it's all about data harvesting, and that's true, but there are also real benefits to signing up for all of the loyalty programs wherever you shop and eat.

Another thing that's nice with a lot of apps is that you can use them to pay for your purchase. For example, at Wawa (large convenience store chain) I can use the self checkout and just scan the screen from the app to pay for my purchase. No need to take out my wallet or cash. And of course you can also place your orders through the app rather than having to call or wait until you're there.

I have the Jack in the box app where I treat staff to 2 tacos at $1.39 at the office, I have enough for a free chicken sandwich which I haven't redeemed in 1 year. I have the KFC app where I have another free chicken sandwich which I haven't redeemed as well. And I have Domino's where I have a free small pizza. All junk food so not in a rush to redeem my free food but good to have if needed.

I run into this problem. I'll earn a reward at a place that we just don't go to that often and it will have a relatively short expiration date. They want you to come back quickly. Dominos had that deal for a while that when you bought a pizza, they gave you a free pizza but it was only good the next week. Well we only go to Dominos about twice a year so that was always useless to me.

This happened tonight. We went to On The Border for dinner. I'm a rewards member. When I got home, I got the email that I earned $5 off my next meal. Fortunately, their rewards don't expire so we will use it, but we only go there maybe 3 or 4 times a year so it'll be a few months.

At most of the restaurants we go to on a regular basis we're somewhat already known to them so we don't use apps or coupons simply because I know how tough of a business it is and I want them to succeed. We already get an extra this or that usually so I can't see taking advantage of them. My three favorite restaurants that we go to on a regular basis already have fewer customers now than prior to the start of covid. Just hoping the can continue to make it.

Pro-tip: Only download an app when you are ready to use it which they often give an introductory promotion (ie, 20% off your purchase good for 24 hours). In other words, don't install apps when you are not ready to use or else they'll tempt you to make a purchase unnecessarily or you'll miss out on a good promotion.

Good tip. Most of the food apps we have were downloaded at the table based on in-store advertising and yes, it often got us some immediate discount, free app, or something else.
