  • Would you do this?

So I got this email from my insurance agent. I'd love to do it, earn some money but I don't know it worries me too! My DD22 no way I think she drives too fast and brakes too hard, but my DD20 and DS17 are both good drivers and would probably make some scratch.

What are the forums opinions on this?

We are excited to announce a new benefit (FREE OF CHARGE) for youthful operators!
Your policy is eligible to add ERIE’s YourTurn rewards-based telematics program for young drivers!

YourTurn Rewards Program at a Glance:
    · Drivers age 16 through 23 can participate and earn rewards for exhibiting good driving behaviors.

    · We will send you a “tag” to place in your vehicle and once the driver downloads the app to their smartphone, they can then start earning rewards for good driving habits!
    · Drivers are scored on 5 components:
    o Distraction/Phone Use
    o Speeding
    o Hard Braking
    o Hard Cornering
    o Harsh Acceleration
    · Every 2 weeks, the driver gets a score ranging from 40 to 100.
    · Scores of 90 or above = $10!
    · 85-89 = $5 reward and 80-84 = $2.50 reward
    · Rewards can be redeemed for gift cards, prepaid Visa cards or can be donated to charity.
    · When redeemed, users will receive the rewards by email.
    · Scores reset every two weeks and users get the opportunity to earn more rewards.
    · Drivers will not be penalized for low scores.
    · Parents can also download the app to track their children’s driving habits!
    · Participation is voluntary, if a user no longer wishes to participate, they can uninstall the application and remove the tag from the vehicle.

Respond “YES” to this email and one of our team members will sign you up, free of charge!

personally no. I drive a sports car. And while I consider myself to be a safe driver (no accidents in 20 years of driving), I'd fail on probably every single one of those points.

    o Distraction/Phone Use
    o Speeding
    o Hard Braking
    o Hard Cornering
    o Harsh Acceleration

Have you ever met a salesperson who offers you something (free even) that is truly a benefit for you?

      I am skeptical.

You're too old to qualify, would you sign your kids up for it?2 of my kids would be fine, the older one I don't think so, but maybe if she knew she was being watched? Or had the potential to earn $$ it would change her habits?

I don't know? I'm just not sure of "them" getting data on my kids. Sure it says they won't be penalized but could they sometime in their future when they try to get their own policies??

          good point

Are there liability issues to consider? What if your kid was speeding and hits a pedestrian, and the courts or insurance company say the kid is grossly negligent in their driving and pull up the records showing rates of speed 2x the limit and they were on a mobile device?

Therefore with that evidence, the other party wants to sue for millions and the insurance company doesn't want to pay any coverage for the lawsuit. You'd be a lot better off in court if there was no eyewitnesses or eyewitnesses that "think" your kid was speeding" than hard evidence of their speed and other driving mistakes. Furthermore, the court will have a complete history of (bad) driving patterns, so you can't even claim that their bad driving was a 1-off deal. With that kind of electronic evidence, you may as well have had a cop standing there with a radar gun. you'd be just as screwed.

And if it becomes known that the insurance company has that information, they might not even be able to cite privacy policies and hide it from the police/investigators if they wanted to. What if that information is subpoenaed?

Drivers will not be penalized for low scores...for now.

My daughter still has a few years before I have to worry about this, but I wouldn't let her do this. Companies are way too intrusive as it is. And I have to do the hard cornering and accelerating or I would have an SUV in my trunk. People here drive like jerks.
