Eliminating the penny

2024 Denver nickels on eBay are selling for $6 - $9 each. If anyone knows why please enlighten me.

Update: the reportedly last round of pennies is going into production right now, and will cease once this set of blanks is used up.

I wonder if any of the final production pennies will be valuable (beyond their cost). Maybe the very last one?

There would be no way to know unless they add a special mark to it which I doubt.

I doubt it. They made 3.2 billion last year. They may make fewer in 2026 but it will still be a pretty large number even if it's "only" 1 billion.

Honestly, I’ve been saying the penny needs to go for years. It’s basically useless in real life, no one wants to carry them, stores round prices anyway, and vending machines ignore them. I get the whole “every bit of saving counts” thing, but more than that, it’s just outdated. If other countries can ditch their low-value coins without chaos, so can we.

Canada eliminated their penny in 2012 and the country didn't collapse. The US will be just fine. This should have happened a long time ago.

1981 and prior year pennies contain 95% copper which is in short supply sort of like silver. Some 1982 pennies also contain copper (3.1 grams) while others contain zinc (2.5 grams).
