My take is...this is fine...but how will a conversation about the shutdown help people make money?
Have you read any of the replies? If your paycheck stops because of the shutdown, that's a big deal, especially if you are in the 70% that lives paycheck to paycheck. How will you pay your bills next week without a paycheck. It's not about making money; it's about surviving.

Make money? Stock up on TP and water if this goes the distance, and then trade for BTC when the dollar is worth nothing.

Keep in mind, not everyone will simply continue working without pay ... That only applies to those considered "essential" to national security, safety/law enforcement, economy, and a few other categories. That accounts for maybe 60-70% of the federal government's ~3M employees. The rest, including up to 90% of some entire agencies, will be furloughed without pay & no back pay, for however long it drags on.

In my micro scale, I really hope they resolve this within a day or two, because I personally have 4 employees that I'm responsible for who will be furloughed ... One of whom doesn't have a working spouse to fall back on their (eventually-paid) paycheck. And because we're overseas, our furloughed employees can't even claim unemployment to help them along if it drags on.

The House passed a bill. It just needs Senate approval and the President's signature.

Stop-gap funding out to mid-March, money for disaster relief, and renewing the farm bill.

I'm glad that they figured themselves out, but this whole exercise should have been unnecessary, and needlessly stressful for millions of federal employees. I hate politicians.

It’s called being prepared. That’s a good thing. It’s not like shutdowns have never happened. They have and do occur. If you are someone directly impacted by them it’s important to have a plan for them.

I was pleased to see the latest bill passed, and without eliminating the debt ceiling. While I don't agree with the practice of playing that card just to get one party's way, I think it's a necessary control to help limit federal spending. It's the practice of weaponizing it that needs to stop.

This edition of political brinkmanship came closer to the deadline than ever, so there was sufficient evidence to worry that a lot of Americans would be left in the dark over the holidays. That's not cool, ever.

Had the first 1500-page CR bill passed, it would have impacted my finances by way in higher inflation. My question to the members here is would you have been okay with all the wasteful spending included in that bill?

If the next administration does a fraction of the things they've threatened, inflation is going to skyrocket. I don't spend any time worrying about things I can't control. I vote, of course, but beyond that what will be will be.

I don't know what was in the bill that got shut down by Musk and Trump. It had broad bipartisan approval though. Trump wanted the new bill to eliminate the debt ceiling but he didn't get his way with that. Of course, he wanted it done before he got into office so that he would be free to borrow without any limit to fund his plans.

How do you address and resolve the fact that the incoming administration wanted the debt ceiling removed? That is essentially giving the next administration a blank check along with a majority house/senate to increase the nation's debt to whatever they want without any oversight.

History tends to repeat itself, and the same guy who set a record with the nation's debt is about to take over again. What exactly did you expect?

More political opinions and hacking on the guy / party some don't happen to like.
The election is over. Does every thread need to be filled with political bias?

If this is going to continue, I'd suggest starting a new subforum titled "Politics" where this stuff can be spoken about freely rather than veiled, and keep the other subforums free of it.

The policy we try to enforce is that it's okay to discuss POLICY but not POLITICS.

Saying "Joe Biden is a doddering old man who doesn't know what's happening" or "Donald Trump has worsening dementia and wears diapers" isn't okay.

Saying "Joe Biden wants to forgive a bunch of student loans" or "Donald Trump wants to eliminate the debt ceiling" is fine.

As a moderator, I have deleted loads of posts that directly targeted both Democrats and Republicans because they were going after the people, not their policies.
