You’ve bet $23,000 on some games? And you have $121,000 in cash under your mattress and almost 1,000 silver bars buried in your yard.
What do you do for a living? You must be making some serious money to be able to throw it away like that.
I’m not a sports fan and don’t bet on sports. I do gamble occasionally. We were at the casino just the other day where I lost $40. Never would I wager $23,000 on anything. We’re multi-millionaires but certainly don’t have that kind of money to just throw away.Steve

Most people here are going to bug out when you say that you've bet $23,000 on a sports game. That said it's all a matter of perspective and percentages.
Could I bet $1,000 on a single game? Sure. Would I personally? Never.
That would only be about 0.2% of my net worth. I haven't read your full story, but if that is 20% of your net worth the you're insane.
If on the other hand you have a net worth of $5M, no debt, and it wouldn't affect you to loose then what difference does it make? Your bet is like other folks here stopping for Starbucks.Last edited by myrdale; 01-08-2024, 05:16 AM.

Your net worth is equal to: Assets - Liabilities = Net Worth
For example:
You own a $200,000 home. (Asset)
You owe $100,000 on that home. (Liability)
You have $10,000 cash. (Asset)
You have $50,000 in retirement. (Asset)
You owe $20,000 in debt. (Liability)
You would have a net worth of $140,000
Beyond your net worth, consider working up a budget.
For example:
You bring home $5,000 per month.
Utilities are $500
Food is $500
Insurance is $200
So on and so forth......
At the end of the month, what ever cash you're left with you still need to assign it to a catagory. Savings? Investment? Fun?
In my own personal budget I have two separate items for the "Fun" catagory listed as:
1) Entertainment
2) Hobbies / Luxury
Hiking gear, telescope, bee hives, new TV, all fall under the Hobby / Luxury category.
TV subscriptions, vacations, picking up bar tab for friends, gambling (lottery ticket in my case) would be entertainment (by my personal definition).
There is absolutely nothing wrong with saying I am going to spend $100 this month on alcohol, so long as it's not a problem (you're not an alcoholic / DUI / beat your wife).
Similarly there is absolutely nothing wrong with gambling, so long as it's not a problem (you're hiding it from family, you can't afford it, you steal to fund your addiction).
All of this is to say: What percent of your net worth is $23,000 bet on a football game?

I used to bet a lot, and I used to pay for the subscriptions to MLB TV, NBA League pass, etc. But when the leagues started to force feed me all the phrases on the sidelines at half court, or in the end zones, etc. I cancelled all my subscriptions. I don't even watch the free games on my local channels of NBA. Haven't since 2020. It is such a waste of my time and I'm glad I came to my sense and no longer bet sports. It's silly, lol. But I will still watch occassional free games of NFL.

It reads as through you're looking for justification for your decision to wager $23,000. My personal advice is cancel your bets now.
To the end of keeping the conversation honest, if you're going to keep the bets, how about going ahead and posting your picks below. Then we can see after the fact how well your financial choice played out.
