Nothing. Which is why I wouldn't give the key to anyone in the first place.

But... you (via the alarm company) at least would know which PIN deactivated the system, and the driver would be accessory to the crime and arrested.

That's all macho and stuff, but FPS don't do much good when you're not around.

I read lots of stuff on the Intarweb which looks real authoritative-like.

It was actually out of the mouth of an ADT sales rep who saw the sign and found it weird I was on his list. He said based on their "internal data, the sign actually deters 80% of crime". Didn't read the data myself nor do I care.

This could be coincidence, but several people on my parents' block were robbed, including their next door neighbor. My parents had used some of my stickers from when I had my alarm installed, and some of the neighbors that also had stickers/actual alarms didn't get robbed. Not sure if 100% of the the victims didn't have stickers, but those that my parents know well enough to ask didn't have them.

My stickers are fading. Maybe time to go to ebay. Might be good Christmas presents!

If these people are robbing multiple houses at once then it makes perfect sense to not touch houses with stickers/signs. Even the slight chance of a triggering will bring the police to the neighborhood therefore decreasing their ability to rob additional houses.

It's no coincidence. Crooks want the path of least resistance. If they are casing a couple of houses deciding which one to target and one has an alarm and one doesn't, of course they're going to pick the one without the alarm.

We have a whole house alarm system. We only set it at night. We also have video cameras around the outside of the house. And spotlights that are motion sensitive.

As someone who's been in the Public Safety field forever, security systems aren't what they use to be in the eyes of law enforcement. Home security alarm's are treated as a low priority call for most departments and the odd's of the intruder still being there when they finally do arrive are very slim. This in it self makes paying a monthly monitoring fee almost a waste of money.

Most people now are simply buying/installing home security camera's to monitor their homes themselves. I purchased 4 Arlo Pro Camera's for our property last year and monitor my home from where ever I happen to be via my iPhone or computer.

The vast majority of home break-in's start with the intruder knocking at your door to see if your home. In my case I have two or three camera's which would capture the entire event. The camera at my front door automatically texts me with a video when someone approaches.

A phone call to our Police Dept. from me reporting a break-in or intruder will get an immediate response from the cops, unlike what an alarm sounding will do.

For me it's been great investment.

                      Did you:
                      • change the default password,
                      • then update the firmware, and
                      • use a different port number?

Otherwise, it's a metaphysical certitude that your DVR is part of a botnet.

We have a home alarm system and we use it. Like DisneySteve said crime happens everywhere. We are discussing the idea of cameras as well. We live in a relatively safe neighborhood, but why invite trouble?

What does that have to do with you thinking that carrying a gun will prevent your house from being burgled when you're nowhere near your house?
