They basically cash those checks as soon as they receive it. They dont process the return first

Almost all of our income is regular W2. We both claim S0 and I had an additional federal tax withholdings in Q4.

It’s expected and we have the money set aside for it but yuck.
I finally finished last night. I majorly procrastinated after doing the first pass a couple of months ago. I was only focused on federal initially and hadn’t even looked at state. We owed federal $20k, one state $200, and another state gave us a $7k refund. All in all, better than I expected.

I also found a mistake on last year’s tax return that I need to file an amendment for. I deducted HSA contributions that were already accounted for on my W2. We’ll owe another $700 for last year plus any penalties. I don’t care about the money (we owe what we owe) but I am disappointed that I made such a stupid mistake.

We got DKs' returns in the mail last week, and I know that it'll take multiple weeks for their returns to get processed, let alone approved ... But is there a way to track the status of a mailed-in return that you owe money on? The website status tracker asks for the "refund amount" ... which for their returns is basically negative. Will that site still provide status updates as they process? Or is there another way? (and I know the site says to give 4 weeks before checking on mailed-in returns, I'm just looking ahead)

I mostly just want to be able to keep an eye on it & eventually get a warm-fuzzy of some sort that their returns have been accepted, processed, and approved. I shouldn't worry, because they were simple returns... And yet, I worry. I just want to be able to positively know that they're done & in the rear-view mirror.

Got everything finished up and sent in at the buzzer.
Had overpaid a little last year, so only had to write checks totaling about $6500 between the feds and two states to take care of all of my estimated taxes in 2023.

The buzzer isn’t for 4 more days. You made it in plenty of time.
