Yes, you can exit and walk into store. I did it when I was there. Its probably not protocol since my car was taking up a spot but wanted to use the restroom.

Maybe people are that bad at walking in that state that it is a legit hazard for them to get out of their vehicle?

I've heard Oregon has relaxed their rule, although, the only time I've been down there in recent years is in a rig that can only be filled at a truck stop. "Truckers" are allowed to fill their own rigs, even before the changes.

It's always been one of those weird quirks about visiting Oregon. If you want fuel service right away, pull in with a Washington plate on your car and immediately get out, like you're about to fill your own gas. They'll come running over . Most of the attendants seem uncomfortable with me standing there watching them fuel my vehicle. But the fact is, they're asking for more trust than is needed or they deserve, my credit card leaves my hand, overfilling a gasoline tank can actually be harmful to the car's EVAP system, and I want to make sure they put in the grade of fuel I ask for.

One Of The Last Two States Prohibiting Self-Serve Gas Pumping Just Ended Their 72-Year Ban (msn.com)

Arcane laws are hard to break but I see Oregon is coming to its senses of allowing self serve gas pumping. New Jersey seems to be the last hold out.

Strictly from the perspective of not having to interface with people when I pump my gas, I'm really glad Oregon put a rest to that requirement. We've always been able to fill our RV ourselves in Oregon because we use the heavy truck pumps for diesel. I've always disliked having to have someone dispense my fuel when going through there in a car.

Hopefully NJ will come to their senses and drop it too. It’s inane. I will happily celebrate if they ever change it.

Does NJ require an attendant to plug in electric cars?

It would be interesting if Buc-ee's ever built a station there. They would have a smiling attendant at every pump.

Nah apparently they don’t care if you electrocute yourself.

A Buc-ee’s here would be awesome except I’d constantly want to go for lunch to get their barbecue sandwich. As for gas attendants if it’s like every other station in NJ they would probably have 2, maybe 3 on a good day.
