  • The finer things

Related a little to another topic, I know a lot of folks appreciate quality and are willing to pay for it.

I thought it would be interesting to get folks' opinions on "best in class quality" of various odd items, regardless of price. Here are few items that I have had personal experience with:

    Clothing - Ralph Lauren
    Men's shoes - Allen Edmonds
    Golf clubs - Titleist
    Fly fishing gear - Orvis
    Roofing material - slate
    Window - Andersen
    Car brand - Lexus/Toyota
    Kitchen appliances - Viking
    Watch - Rolex
    franchise steakhouse - Ruths Chris
    Frozen pizza - Di'Gorno
    Mac N Cheese - Kraft
    Sunglasses - Ray Ban
    Volleyball - Baden
    Dinnerware - Spode
    Holiday dinnerware -Fitz & Floyd

I must say I have never heard anyone include Kraft mac and cheese on a list of the "finer things".

    * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
    * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
    * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

I tried the generic and ended up having to add a bunch of cheese. 😜

I understand that, but typically the phrase "the finer things" refers to luxury items. A Rolex watch or Spode dinnerware or Viking appliances yes. Mac and cheese, not so much.

What about Winchester and Marlin old rifles? And for optics, I would have thought Zeiss to be the creme-de-la-creme?

For real quality items for self and home: LL Bean. Expensive but lifetime guarantee and their stuff really does last.

Cars: I like Acuras. Never had an issue with those cars, great value I think.

Luggage: Briggs & Reily - lifetime guarantee. I travel a lot for business and was buying new luggage every 3-4 years. Not any more.

Cookware: Calphalon. We went through 3 or 4 sets of inexpensive cookware in the early years of our marriage. We finally splurged and bought a costly set of Calphalon tri-ply stainless cookware. We've had it for about 10 years now and it still looks brand new. It cooks much better than the cheap stuff. It cleans up easily. And it shows absolutely no signs of ever wearing out.

Years ago I splurged on a Circulon cookware set that is dishwasher safe. Same thing as Disneysteve, it still looks new and cooks really well.

Some of the model 70 Winchesters are pretty nice, particularly pre 1964,
Marlin is pretty much a utility "chevy" grade product.
Zeiss is good stuff too, as is Leica. Hard to beat Swarovski binos & spotting scopes.

When going through my dad's stuff, I found a bunch of guns/rifles that all look basically brand new - Winchesters, Marlins, S&W, Ruger, even a seemingly brand new vintage Daisy RR B.B. gun with wood stock.

I put them all in a gun safe - I barely even know how to operate them.
