I heard on the radio this morning that the average parents spend $495 on their kids during the summer time while school is out for activities and entertainment. The report said that this money is to "keep their kids happy."

$495 sounds pretty low. If you send your kid to any sort of camp, it's going to cost you more than that. If you figure most camps run 8 weeks, that's only about $62/week. Good luck finding a camp in that price range.
Even without camp, if you put the kid in any sort of organized activity (sports, dance, etc.) or take day trips or go to the beach on the weekends or the movies or museums or whatever, spending $495 over the course of 10 weeks of summer is pretty simple.Steve
* Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
* Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
* There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.
