  • Average Spending of Parents during the summer

I heard on the radio this morning that the average parents spend $495 on their kids during the summer time while school is out for activities and entertainment. The report said that this money is to "keep their kids happy."

    I believe it...

I've taken two Fridays off so far and have spent around $75 for things to do with my son.

All part of my summer plan. A lot more Friday's to go too.

$495 sounds pretty low. If you send your kid to any sort of camp, it's going to cost you more than that. If you figure most camps run 8 weeks, that's only about $62/week. Good luck finding a camp in that price range.

Even without camp, if you put the kid in any sort of organized activity (sports, dance, etc.) or take day trips or go to the beach on the weekends or the movies or museums or whatever, spending $495 over the course of 10 weeks of summer is pretty simple.

I spend close to that for one weekend. I host one or two exchange students during the summer and we like to show them around town. Chicago is expensive.

that's less than a week of camp where we used to live and a little more than a week where we do live.

I guess it's possible but the figure seems a bit too low to me. 500$ in 3 months for different summer activities? Hmm...

seems low, no way camp is included

for people with young ones, there is free bowling every year, just google it, there's places in just about every city

Camping can be surprisingly expensive, especially if you have to buy any gear. The cost of our campsites for last week was about $400 for 4 days for 3 sites and we had to reserve them in January.
