  • Political discussions moving forward...

Is it possible to update the rules to ban all political discussions? Even ones related to finances...its not working well.

This is a copy/paste of something I said in another sections...

"Im not sure if the entire election/current politics has anything to do with this (imo it does) but the tone/discussions throughout SA has changed. Ive been here for a while and cant remember a time where users were so opinionated about everything...and the attacks between members is at an all time high.

Its great to have discussions about finances and disagree and argue your point...but the "comebacks" you're seeing is something new. Those very petty jabs sort of comebacks. And these are coming from grown a$$ adults. There has to be a direct correlation to the things that have been jammed down our throats over the past year on every news channel...every news website, facebook interactions, etc etc...and whats happening here. I dont know how else to explain it since it never existed before."

I dont even think a section dedicated to politics is healthy either. You're going to have members arguing there and that will spill over to the rest of the threads.

For those who have been members here a while...am I crazy or do you also agree that the interactions between users has changed a lot within the last year?

I agree with you. I'll suggest it to the team.

    * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
    * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
    * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

I disagree. I find value from others opinions. If someone takes it too far, then I suggest a reprimand or ban from the site.

Here is the description of this site, it's "mission statement" if you will:

Saving Advice is a community built around the notion that saving money is good. We offer free articles and information on all aspects of personal finance including debt reduction, how to save money, how to make money and how to invest. If you need any money saving advice, you have found the right place.

I fail to see how discussing a political candidate's views on the media or policy regarding the LGBTQ community or whether or not to build a border wall fits that mission.

I guess I have a difference of opinion of what "General Discussion" is.

Well general discussion does say: "Feel free to talk about anything and everything about money." Which worked out well until political views started trickling over....which is just about the time we saw a tidal wave of personal attacks. This why im proposing that all political talk/topics be banned.

As someone that does enjoy engaging in non finance topics, I do agree with you regarding the value from other opinions. However, with volatile topics like politics, you end up with people getting bent out of shape and reporting people because they don't like their opinion.

Also, two people with opposing views might feel like their exchange is perfectly fine, but others view it as arguing and report it.

Wow! I shocked that adults would talk of censorship. Did you know that you have control of yourself to view these topics? Did you know you control yourself and your actions and responses to topics you like or dislike? This includes your response to someone attacking you and your point of view. If it is upsetting to you, you should move on.

There are plenty of political topics that involve money: taxes and thus tax policy, our national debt, building a wall is likely our tax dollars (a portion of our income), and so on.

If anything, I think political discussion give us as adults practice in doing what our political leaders should be doing and that is to find common ground. Practice in acceptance of other, practice in communicating how we feel and think, and practice listening to others.

Like I previous said, I can't say I disagree with you. However, the political thread is in the Everything Else category. It is the people that bring their bias into the other threads and throw digs at the opposing side that gets those threads off topic.

Oh that little site. Here's some fun facts about bogleheads that was written in 2014...

                        FORUM STATS

Here are some recent forum stats to show how far the forum has come in this relatively short period of time (2007-present, 2014):

The forum now boasts ~35,000 registered members and about 4 times that many "guests".
Members have made nearly two million posts.
The forum gets more than 1,500,000 visits per month.
The forum averages more than 16,500,000 page reads per month.
At any one time, there are between 500 and 700 people online.

                        They're doing something right...

I know...theres just no way for that not to happen unless its banned all together. Users will have heated debates in the everything else section and it will (is) spill over to the others.

What does that have to do with SavingAdvice?

I have seen bogleheads brought up on many occasions for people to get more information on a topic. If bogleheads is so great (not saying it isn't), why even bother visiting SA?

I know of forums that have a zero tolerance on discussing other forums!

I am not the admin of the site, nor to I want to be, but if I were I would want the site to have its own identity. An identity that hopefully people enjoy and want to be a part of. Not a site where members point out how other sites do things or direct members to for information.
