  • How many days do you vacation each year?

As a corollary to the "Yearly vacation budget" thread:

How many days of vacation do you take each year?

Don't answer based on how many days you just take off from work but rather how many days you actually do some sort of vacation activity that involves some degree of travel, even if it's just a day trip to drive to a nearby destination.

More than 28 days. We probably do at least a 2-day weekend once per month (sometimes longer), plus a longer trip every year (5-10 days). I'm not even bothering to count day trips, which are many.

The thing is that hiking, days at the beach, days at the lake, camping, visiting family, etc., all cost virtually nothing. We live centrally to a lot of great locations (that people travel from all over the world to see) but we just don't do a lot of high dollar vacation stuff. Mostly we do hiking and enjoying the great outdoors. We do also tend to seek out things off the beaten path. We attend a lot of concerts and shows (LA & SF) but we don't attend a lot of expensive/popular/crowded shows. & when the same shows become crowded and popular and cost 5 times as much (as they often do), they lose their charm.

True, but note that the question made no mention of spending. I was strictly asking about number of days of vacation that you take. The other thread asks about spending.

Just pointing out that my own results aren't going to "match up" very well.

I selected 8-14, but now that I think about it 22-28 is more realistic. One of my vacation goals is to travel at least once per year international. Which I started 2 years ago in order to better utilize my renewed passport. Beyond that is going to be 3-4 extended weekend type trips for visiting friends/various sites in the US.
"I'd buy that for a dollar!"

Voted 8-14 as that is the typical year. Some years have fallen into 15-21.

We take 1-2 longer trips every year of 5-10 days each. But most of our vacations end up being short weekend getaways. We do something like that probably once every month or two, just 2 or 3 days at a time.

I take 4 full weeks of vacation. Generally, that is 2 one-week vacations and 1 two-week vacation. Then I also do numerous overnight and weekend trips, plus day trips though I don't personally count those as vacations (despite my initial post saying to count them). The exception would be if a take time off from work and we do a series of day trips. If we just do a day trip on a Saturday, though, I wouldn't count that as vacation. To me, it isn't a vacation if it doesn't involve at least an overnight stay somewhere away from home.

This year I was lucky enough to be able to say so far this year I've taken 26 days (went on a three week trip to the UK which was the bulk of it). In reality I'd say we vacation 10-20 days per year and the bulk of that is camping. I love overseas travel but I am happy to do that every 2-3 years not annually.

                    I'd say normally 1 week.

I get a lot more vacation days than that, but I use a lot of them to work around the house

So based on 2 very unscientific polls, there does appear to be a correlation between how much vacation time people take and how much they spend, which is what I expected.

53% take at least 22 days.
                      47% spend over $3,000.

There are exceptions, of course, but in general, the more vacationing you do, the more you spend. Makes sense.

I would never last. I put a high priority on my vacation time. I try not to go more than about 3 months without a break from work.

28+ days a year. And way more than $3k.

Monkeymama how do you vacation so much and spend so little? If you overnight 12 times a year 1x/month overnight how much is the hotel? Is it $50/night? Camping the entire year? If it's $50 that's still $600 for just that for the year and not counting gas if it's driving distance or flights. Do you only pack food? And not eat out?

How do you curb the spending on so many days vacationing and where do you stay?

My workplace has "mandatory" vacation days where if you don't use it, you lose it. As a matter of fact, I am on day 2 of this annual, 2 week long, "use it or lose it" vacation day as I type this.

I am not doing anything special though. Mostly just staying home and relaxing.
