We just got back from our 2018 vacation so I thought I'd post the results. Our costs increased because we added a third city to our Arkansas itinerary. We visited Bentonville, Little Rock, and Hot Springs. We utilized hotel points for only one night, and paid for one night. We ran in to some limitations on where we could stay using points because of room availability and because we had our dog with us. Because we added some things, we also cut back a little and did not do the Hot Springs baths. We decided we'd rather add the Bentonville leg of the trip.

We drove 1,400 miles and visited Crystal Springs Museum (Bentonville), Little Rock High School National Historic Site, Bill Clinton Presidential Museum (Little Rock), and Hot Springs National Park (including Bathouse Row). We got in some nice walks / trail hikes with the dog. We saw some interesting sites in a state we had never visited, learned some things, saw some gorgeous scenery, and really enjoyed our time hanging out together. We even had a couple deluxe splurges like sharing a tasting flight of beers at Superior Bathouse (they utilize thermal spring water to make their beer). Before our trip I read several library books on the places we were going to visit and on the history of Little Rock HS, doing a little "armchair travelling" as a buildup to our road trip. I came home with a list of 2 books and 1 DVD I want to read/watch to continue my "education." While on the road we listened to audiobooks from the library.

We shelled out $264 on gas, tolls, hotels, food & drink, and one souvenier (a museum book). There were no admission fees. We started off with a full tank and came home with it about 2/3 full, so if you add another estimated $6 for a top-up, that brings us to $270.
If we calculate cost using IRS mileage instead of just gas (to account for wear & tear on our car), and deducting what we would have spent on food if we had been home, then our cost was $932.
And what was our "true cost"? Somewhere in between those 2 numbers.
    And worth every penny.

Since this thread popped back up, we returned from a vacation last Monday. My wife and I spent 2 weeks in Disney World. Our daughter joined us for the 2nd of those weeks. So it was 2 adults for 14 days and 1 adult for 7 days. We did a few splurge things on this trip. We flew rather than driving. My wife and I did a dinner show one night and did a nice dinner one night.

We already had our Disney park tickets as we have annual passes. Counting everything else including airport parking, condo rental, meals, general spending, etc., we spent about $5,000 for the trip for the 3 of us. That is high for us, but as I said, we splurged on a number of things, most notably airfare. Driving costs us about $250 in gas and $200 for hotels on the road so $450 total. Flying costs considerably more than that.

      * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
      * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
      * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

This year was a small year for us. We spent $1,694 on a week trip to the upper peninsula of MI. And another $268 on a long weekend at a friend's lake house. Next year is a big year for us. We are going on an African safari for 2 weeks to celebrate our 30th anniversary. We never had a honeymoon, so this will be that, too. The safari is $40k not including airfare. We are staying at some pretty spiffy places.

I’m personally amazed at how little some spend.

I have the travel bug like others have posted. I try to make two international weeklong trips a year plus little weekend trips here and there. Being single and young, I can do this fairly inexpensively. I usually spend about $6000 on travel annually for just me.

This year has been an anomaly, as I haven’t done much travel (none internationally) and I’m still at $4300.

5 days in the Florida Keys - $800 for airline tickets and rental car. All other expenses were generously paid for by my boyfriend’s family

Weekend in LA - $400 for gas, hotel, food/drinks

Weekend in Palm Springs - $1000 for vacation rental, concert tickets, and food/drinks

Christmas in Atlanta - $600 airline tickets, staying with family

New Years in Vail - not sure yet but budgeting $1500

So jealous! This is definitely a bucket list item. That is going to be an amazing trip!

I have friends that did a similar trip last year but their’s was only $15k and I thought their vacation was luxurious and spiffy. I can’t even imagine the kind of places $40k buys you. Have fun!!

Nope, sorry! If you're interested in seeing pictures of any of the places we visited, all have nice web sites with a good amount of photos.
Arkansas definitely earns it's nickname of "The Natural State." Lots of beautiful lakes, tall trees, and rolling hills. Our timing was a bit past the peak of fall colors, but it was still lovely. The 2 days we did most of our sightseeing we had perfect weather in the 60's. Pretty lucky timing. Because we hit the road early each day we saw nice sunrises (sunsets too).

I think we are spending around $20k again on travel.
