  • Hard Water

I'm thinking of buying water softener for our house. I know the many benefits of it. But I can't decide what model to buy, how much? The cost vary from $500 to $2000. If you have professional installer it might run additional $1000. I had a kinetico sale demonstrate their product and their cost is just absurd IMO $4K with full installation & 1 year warranty Any thoughts?

Not ready to buy yet, hopefully next summer.

Loved the two water softeners we had. The first one was a purchase and was installed. It was a local company and I think it was $1000 -1200, but that was over 12 years ago. The next one was also a local company, but we rented it as we knew we wouldn't recoup the cost before moving again. We rented it for $16 or $18 a month. Renting might be a way to get one installed and try it out. Usually they will let you buy it out, so you can stop the rental fee.

Water softeners aren't that complicated. Don't let a salesman upsale you too much.

      Thanks this is very helpful.

The salesman tried his best though.

Our well water has a lot of iron. Fixtures would constantly be tinted brown and it is difficult to do a good job with laundry and dishes without a softener. I think the best kind are the "on demand" type by Waterite, Kinetico or similar. The other type that just periodically cycle off of a timer will waste salt and water at times when not necessary.

get a water test done before deciding on anything. A water test will show what size and scope of water treatment your specific home requires.
