  • One More Day

Tomorrow is my last day of full time employment.
Starting on a part time situation next week primarily to pay for some health insurance. I'll help them out however much they need me, but planning for approx. 16 hours a week or so.

Really looking forward to a whole bunch more free time to enjoy hobbies.

        Awesome!

I'm curious if you still stick it out or go back to work more as time goes on. Unless your hobbies keep you busy all the time I suspect you will find something else to keep you busy after a while. Retirement gets boring from what I've been told unless you are doing something. Working next to nothing is closer to retirement than non-retired. lol
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you're stupid and make bad choices.

Congratulations! I am not a jealous person by nature but retirement (or semi-retirement) is one thing that I will confess to getting jealous about. I know my day will come but until it does, I'll just have to enjoy it vicariously through others who have successfully reached that point.

Enjoy your new found freedom. Let us know how it's going both financially and personally.

I'm quite certain that I am not one of those people who will be bored in retirement, though I know folks who have been. I have more than enough non-work interests to keep me occupied and engaged for the rest of my life.

              Yeah, me neither.
Work was getting to be a real interruption actually

My wife and I say that ALL the time. I know exactly what you mean.

Tomorrow I'll be going back to work : )

Retirement life was good but it does get boring when you have a school-aged kid. We very-very-very briefly considered home schooling just so that we can take him around the world. The funny thing is, we are still stuck taking vacations according to a schedule (son's school schedule).

Other than that, sometimes, I forget the day of the week.

                  Good luck.

Yeah I was always wondering how retiring before you kids are in college can end up being kind of pointless because you are chained to your kids.

Well, you do end up with a lot of time on your hands; and we took advantage of it to liquidate our real estate holdings. The good thing is we quickly realized that we want to keep the babysitters so we've kept the pre-retirement babysitting arrangement; this worked out perfectly.

If I don't enjoy work, I wouldn't go back to work. Wife doesn't like working so she retired. My retirement was different, I don't really have any particular reason to retire, maybe I just retired because wife nags me to retire so much and thought we can do a lot of interesting things once I retire.

                        This is an interesting point.

I've often told people that rather than focusing on what you are retiring "from", you need to focus on what you are retiring "to".

How will you spend your days? What will you do with all of that free time? What will make you feel happy, fulfilled, productive, and useful?

Am I understanding this correctly? Since you put your real estate holdings up for sale, you decided to keep your pre-retirement babysitting arrangement? Selling your real estate was comparable to two people working full time jobs?

Personally, I would never pay anyone to watch my child if it wasn't necessary.

I can understand still wanting a babysitter for at least some portion of time. As much as you love your kids, you still need a break.
